The products we buy for our skin may actually be damaging. Check out these myths!

Myth: Vigorously scrubbing skin with soap will cure acne.

It can make acne worse. Wash your face 1-2 times daily with warm water and gentle cleansers (http://www.neutrogena.ca/cleansers). Pat with a fresh towel.

Myth: Higher SPF = better protection.

Regardless of SPF, most sunscreens only protect from UVB rays — not harmful UVAs. Choose a broad spectrum SPF 15-30.

Myth: Junk food causes acne.

Greasy residue from junk food can aggravate acne, but there’s no link from eating it.

Myth: Popping pimples is the fastest way to clear them.

You actually push more bacteria and oil in — and it can scar.

Myth: Steam opens pores.

Pores don’t open or close… but steam helps cleanse and moisturize.

Myth: Shaving makes new hair thicker/darker.

The blade creates a blunt edge, making hair feel thicker.

Myth: Tanning cures acne.

While it might zap some pimples, UV rays stimulate oil production!

Myth: Tanning booths are safer than the sun.

You get 12x more UVA exposure, and your risk for cancer skyrockets.

Myth: Natural products are better.

Ideal products blend natural and synthetic ingredients.

Myth: Drinking lots of water will moisturize skin.

No link here — dehydration doesn’t dry your skin.

Go spread the word on these skin myths!

In the ancient days of Babylonians and Egyptians (3500 B.C.), a chewing stick sufficed: chewing on one end of the stick would split it into a brush-like texture.

In China (1600 B.C.), aromatic tree twigs freshened breath. Later, the first hard-bristled toothbrush was invented there.

In 1690, the word “toothbrush” was written into an autobiography — the word’s first known use. French dentists were the first to promote toothbrush use.

By 1780, William Addis created the first modern toothbrush… while in prison in England! It was made of cattle bone and swine bristles.

In 1857, H.N. Wadsworth was first to patent the toothbrush. Less than 30 years later, mass production of toothbrushes began in America.

In 1938, DuPont changed the way we brush with nylon synthetic bristles: softer and more hygienic than the hard hair bristles used at the time.

Following WWII, U.S. Army soldiers brought the toothbrushing habit home with them. Just a short time later, in 1954 Switzerland, the first electric toothbrush was produced.

It took just 7 more years to produce a rechargeable/cordless electric toothbrush, then a rotary. By 2003, the toothbrush was deemed the #1 invention people can’t live without.

Now, toothbrushes vary by head shape, bristle hardness, and handle curve. Specialty toothbrushes like chewable plastic, end-tufted (for gums) and interdental (for braces) are also prominent, along with mouthwash products (http://www.listerine.ca/), floss, and other dental hygiene implements.

What’s your favorite type of toothbrush?

This infographic was submitted to us by Haymore Endontics.

This is a nice quick guide offering tips to help make your teeth healthier right away! We can offer a few tips of our own on how to make this a better infographic, rather than just a guide.

To start, it would be excellent to have illustrations/icons accompanying each of the 8 tips, rather than every other tip. Text in an infographic should be aided by illustrations or data visualization whenever possible. There are ways to enhance the illustrations as well so that they help to tell the story on their own.

The first illustration is the only one that doesn’t really work toward the story. The image of the girl brushing her teeth (while cute!) doesn’t convey any info about soft bristles or toothbrush handle shape. The second image does let you know that there will be info about electric toothbrushes — but it could also help explain the point of Tip 3, that electric brushes don’t necessarily clean better than manual ones. Maybe an electric toothbrush and a manual toothbrush could be on a pedestal, like at a sporting event, but they’re both on the same spot and have the same medal? Just an idea for a visual metaphor to help show that they are equal!

The same goes for the floss. An illustration of how to use floss as described in Tip 7 would be more effective here.

It would be great to see some data interwoven here, too. What percent of people prefer hard-bristled brushes? How many times a week does the average person floss? Even without data, a few facts always help ground an infographic, and data helps add a little intrigue and relatability (such as “I floss way more/way less than the average person!”).

In all I’d give this infographic a C — the illustrations should be working a bit harder for the storyline, and I’d love to see some facts and/or stats scattered throughout. (Plus it could use a little proofing. Tip 4 is actually labelled as “2,” and there’s inconsistency in the use of periods throughout.)

This infographic was submitted to us by Erectile Doctor.

It features a very clean layout, clear section breaks, iconography, and a bit of data viz. There is a whole lot of information here, so it makes a very useful guide for anyone seeking to learn more about the subject.

For the most part, the infographic avoids going too heavy on the text. The explanatory text below “Careers Most Likely to Cause Sexual Health Problems” is the only somewhat problematic point — my eyes just sort of cruise over the text there. It goes to show that even 3-4 lines of text on an infographic can look like far too much.

In place of some of the icons, it would be great to see more data visualization: the 5 Facts on Erectile Dysfunction section contains 5 numbers, but none of them are quantified with graphs, charts, or other forms of data viz. The more that numbers can be expressed visually, the faster the reader will be able to comprehend the numbers. Since everything after the graph is only illustrated with icons and text, it’s a little bit dense to get through.

In all, I’d give this infographic a B. Lots of great information, but could cut down a bit on text in various places, and utilize more than just one graph to tell its story more quickly — attention span is an important thing to, well, pay attention to!

Baby Proofing Your Home – An infographic by the team at Baby Care Journals

This infographic was submitted to us by Baby Care Journals.

There are a lot of indispensable tips here for ensuring that your home is ready when your baby gets moving. The illustrations are all very helpful in showing expectant or new parents exactly how these safety tips can be enacted around their home. Although it shares a lot of information, it’s also not too long — so it doesn’t take more than 5 minutes to get all of the info.

That said, this graphic could use a bit less text throughout. While it’s important to properly explain why/how to babyproof the home, with so many tips included it really gets heavy quickly. There are a lot of easy places to cut just a few words — and it really makes a world of difference. For example:

“Place covers [or sliding plates] over unused outlets[;] <del datetime="2013-04-15T20:34:17+00:00">Use outlet covers or sliding outlet plates</del><del datetime="2013-04-15T20:33:36+00:00">instead of</del> avoid [choking risks like] outlet plugs<del datetime="2013-04-15T20:42:40+00:00">, which can pose a choking risk</del>.”
or
“Don’t hang shelves or artwork directly over <del datetime="2013-04-15T18:54:39+00:00">baby’s</del> crib <del datetime="2013-04-15T18:54:39+00:00">for obvious reasons</del>.”

It would also be nice to see more numbers/statistics. Although morbid, numbers on this topic really would help to prove the point. For example, the stat about 2,000 children ages 14 and under dying annually is a good stat to help prove that proofing your house is really important. If there are similar numbers about how many children die or are injured from a few of the specific rooms/appliances mentioned (the stat about drowning is a good example), it would be impactful to include them.

In all I’d give this infographic a B — great info, good visual connections to the tips, but some more data and less text would bring it up considerably.

Infographic by 12 Palms Recovery Center

This infographic was submitted to us by 12 Palms Recovery Center.

This graphic makes clear use of typography, iconography, and some data visualization to tell its story. Especially effective elements are the map of relative percentages of drug-related pregnancies by state and the breakdown of pregnancy risks by drug. The organization and layout are quite clear, so it’s easy to follow this infographic from start to finish.

There are a few instances where I wish that more illustration or data visualization had been invoked. For example, the first section relies almost entirely on text to explain the total numbers of births and babies born with birth defects. The stopwatch imagery used for “247 births per minute” and “4 births per second” could have easily integrated a pie chart or other tool to illustrate the numbers. One we reach “This means (3) out of 100 babies…” the data viz steps in at last!

I’d also like to see more iconography integrated into “How Drugs Can Harm Your Baby”. The icons used for the harmful effects are excellent, but because the drugs are just spelled out and not illustrated, and the numbers of usage, birth defects, etc. are also just written out, it still ends up looking a little text-heavy. This would have been a great opportunity to invoke more data visualization, too, to show how many pregnancies are affected by each drug. If you read through, you can see that marijuana affects about 100x more pregnancies than ecstasy — but this would be easier to grasp with pictograms or a bar chart.

I think the graphic would also benefit from a greater variety of colors in the human body diagram in “Drugs and the Areas Affected.” Once you start looking at the body, it’s hard to make the distinction between Meth and Cocaine, Steroids and Marijuana, etc. since the colors are so close together.

In all I’d give this infographic a B. It’s easy to get through, data-rich, and doesn’t drag on too long or leave much out. It could just be enhanced by reducing the reliance on text and typography a bit, and making some of the data easier to interpret.

This infographic was submitted to us by Sinotech.

I love all the illustration and iconography on this infographic, and am glad to see some data viz scattered throughout. I especially like the final chart. The organization is clear and the layout is easy to follow. There isn’t too much text, but there is a fair amount of white space, so it does take awhile to scroll through the entire infographic.

The detailed illustrations of medical devices are really interesting to look through (though I’m dying to know what all the numbers on the Medical Analyzer are!), and they provide a nice visual break from the aesthetic of the rest of the infographic.

There are a few instances where I wish data visualization had been employed, such as the sleep apnea sufferer’s likelihood of car accidents, strokes, and heart disease (maybe 6 of the car icons, 4 of the brain icons and 3 of the hearts?) and “The risk of DVT is 8 times higher for patients who are hospitalized.” The more work the illustrations and icons can do to explain the information, the better!

In all I’d give this infographic a B+ — it’s clean and easy to understand, and iconography and data viz are used to the infographic’s benefit. All I would work on is condensing the space a bit (making the numbers of each medical advance smaller could save space) and utilizing data viz whereever it’s applicable.

This infographic was submitted to us by Serious Supplements.

Although this provides a “point/counterpoint” argument regarding the safety and legality of DMAA, it is all “info” and no “graphic.” In essence, it’s text pasted onto a background, with no visual context or reference. It’s also devoid of hard numbers to help back up either argument. So, although there are no especially heavy instances of text in the infographic, the text appears heavy-handed anyway — because it’s all there is to look at.

Additionally, some typographical errors detract from the messaging of the infographic. For example, the first argument uses inconsistent title casing on both the “No” and “Yes” arguments. In the “No” argument, “harmful” is for some reason uncapitalized, while “Safe” is capitalized in the “Yes” box. The first instance of the word “is,” however, is missing from the “Yes” argument. This type of error is repeated in the second “Yes” argument.

Proofreading your infographic is a critical step to upholding your image online. In ideal circumstances, the infographic will be shared and critiqued across the web — bearing your company name and/or logo. Having a less-than-polished product linked to your name just isn’t great for business, whether that product is your website, a flyer, an email, an infographic, or anything else.

In all I’d have to give this graphic a D-. It doesn’t really end the debate with a decision — “The Answer” is that the “Yes” side argues “Yes” and the “No” side argues “No” — and there is neither illustration nor data visualization. There also isn’t any data to be visualized, and the text throughout contains errors. One would need to restart this infographic from the beginning to get it into shape.

This infographic was submitted to us by Express Scripts. They also provided this description:

Prescription drug overdoses kill more than 15,000 people and result in 1.2 million emergency room visits each year. Abuse of prescription medication is responsible for more deaths than cocaine and heroin combined. Express Scripts combats this national epidemic with a unique combination of industry-leading, proprietary data analytics and tried-and-true detective work. Learn more or download a copy of the infographic at http://lab.express-scripts.com/

This infographic contains clearly-presented facts with minimal text, allowing the reader to visually absorb the information and get a better sense of scope and proportion. For example, it’s visually clear that the overwhelming type of prescription drug fraud is drug-seeking, and that most prescription abusers are between the ages of 35 and 50.

The horizontal layout is not often used in web-based infographics, but because it doesn’t sprawl or require horizontal scrolling, it works here. The division of background colors and textures helps visually separate the “problem” section from the “solution” section.

The only thing I think this infographic lacks is… “that something.” It seems to be the sort of design that someone would respond to by saying, “It needs some pizzazz. Can we make it pop?” There’s nothing particularly standout about the design to draw me in — although the headlines do an excellent job in terms of content/copy. Perhaps a more engaging headline design, rather than just a plain font? A few illustrations or an unexpected element somewhere?

(I also happened to notice a typo: “Evidenced-based” instead of “Evidence-based.”)

In all I’d give this infographic an A-. It’s a concise and effective picture of the impact of prescription drug abuse as far as content, but could use a bit more visual interest and a touch of proofreading.

This infographic was submitted to us by Quench, who also provided this description:

Americans are a population that constantly needs our thirst quenched and water still seems to be the most popular drink of choice. According to Beverage Marketing, Americans are ingesting water in greater quantities than ever before, drinking twice as much water than they were a decade ago. This increase has led to a total of 91 billion gallons of water consumed last year which is an astronomical amount. Unfortunately, despite the increased amount of water consumption, the fact of the matter remains that most common drinking sources are still risky or insufficient in quality in spite of our technological advances. Thankfully most of us don’t have to face dreadful drinking circumstances but it is still up to debate whether or not our water is actually adequate.

This infographic features clean design and clear data visualization, telling its story with small bursts of text and enough illustration, iconography, and white space to digest the information without getting bored. The color palette is pleasing and consistent and there are some interesting facts within. With a bit more attention to proofreading, this infographic would be great!

There are a couple of instances of typos or odd phrasing that seem to have been missed when proofing this infographic. Under “Problem #2,” the text is off. “This list of contaminants commonly appears in water.” It’s a phrasing issue that makes it sound like the list itself is in the water… “This is a list of contaminants that commonly appear in water” would be preferable, or “This list of contaminants shows some nasty ingredients in your drinking water” — something like that. There’s also inconsistency between “anti-microbial” and “anti microbial” (although actually it’s “antimicrobial”), and under “UV Sanitization,” “filers” should be “filters.” Infographics need to be polished in both design and copy, so proofreading before publishing is a critical step.

In all I’d give this infographic a B+. Great data, nice clean visualization and design, but some attention to detail would take this to the next level.
