This map was submitted to us by LondonTown, and this description comes from their site:

What makes the Olympics in London so different from any Olympics before is its use of the whole city throughout the Games. No spectators in central London will ever be more than 30 minutes away from an Olympic venue, with some of the capital’s most iconic landmarks acting as a backdrop for the greatest show on earth. Most events will take place at the ground-breaking 2.5sq km Olympic Park in Stratford, a mere seven minutes away from the city centre by Olympic Javelin train. Other events will be scattered around in all directions at key venues a short journey from the center of town. 9.6 million tickets have been issued for the Olympics but the major ticket will be London itself, with the capital set to come alive throughout the summer.

This detailed map is really intriguing and offers a great overview of how each venue across the city will be used in the Games. Having the Tube map in addition will be really instrumental for lots of travelers hoping to navigate between events.

The thing with this graphic is that it is solely a map. There are opportunities to introduce infographic elements like data viz (number of seats per venue, tonnes of sand at Horse Guards Parade, etc.) but mainly due to space constraints and the geographic focus, these elements weren’t enacted.

As a map I give this an A–it’s fantastic, easy to understand and really useful. But I can’t really grade it as an infographic since there is no data visualization.

This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at ReachTEL. They included this description:

ReachTEL has conducted a poll of over a thousand Queenslanders’ asking them about the coal-seam gas industry. In addition to the CSG questions, we asked for State voting intentions. The polling was conducted nationally on Tuesday night (16th August) using our fully automated voice broadcast market research capabilities. This gives us the ability to have audited research results back in our customer’s hands in literally hours instead of days or even weeks.

The data is very clearly displayed here. There’s no ambiguity about the questions or responses, and no filler data. We see which party is the most popular overall and the varying opinions within each party on particular issues of coal-seam gas and other environmental concerns. It’s nice that the colors for each answer remain the same throughout, so there’s a unity and continuity to the data that allows for even simpler interpretation.

Design-wise, this infographic is quite plain. An infographic should be inviting and interesting to look at, but the designer here displayed the information in rather muted tones and simple structure. All of the data is displayed in the same size and type of pie chart throughout. Designers should take advantage of the graphic medium to go “outside of the box,” as it were. It is possible to make a unique and engaging design that is still clear to viewers.

Overall I’d give this infographic a C. It is telling a story, there isn’t too much text, and data viz is definitely employed throughout. However, it’s just not eye-catching. It’s extremely basic and, well, average, hence the “C.” Spice it up with a little creative illustrating and maybe a few more points of data–maybe even a sentence or two about the coal-seam gas industry for those who aren’t in the know–and it’ll be well on its way.

This infographic was submitted to us by Travelstart. They offered this information about their research:

The researchers contacted 50 different outlets across 6 travel agency brands, and successfully collected 317 quotes for flights to 10 international destinations to investigate pricing, consistency and the quality of service offered by the travel agents.

The agents who were contacted were not told that they were part of a survey, in order to establish the level of service that would be offered to any regular call-in customer. The first price that the agency quoted was used in analysing the results of the survey – so no negotiating took place.

While Travelstart commissioned the research and identified six travel agency brands and 10 popular flight routes, Synovate selected the dates and flight times, the number of passengers and other elements that were used in the research.

The statistics contained in this infographic are stunning. For those wondering, the R33,000 that South Africans might be talked into overspending is equal to about $3,950 or €2,930. The way these price differences are visualized is very effective, showing that people are most likely to get ripped off when flying to London. It’s a good example of unique but applicable data viz. The color scheme and general design of this infographic are also pretty nice. It’s very basic but easy to understand.

The only place I would wish for more data viz is in the section addressing what else could be bought for the R33,000 overspend. 4 pairs of Jimmy Choo shoes? Let’s see them. Groceries for 6 months? That could also be visualized–6 full bags of groceries. I think that would only serve to add to the point of the infographic, which is–look how money much you’re liable to be duped out of through travel agents.

Overall I’d give this infographic an A-. It makes its point without being too salesy, while still getting its own brand in there. It employs data viz effectively and the company compiled its own research specifically for the IG. Just a touch more data viz would make this great!

This infographic about the benefits of educational travel comes to us from the folks at Explorica.

I like the color scheme and design of this infographic and the simple graphics used. There is a good balance between text and graphics so it has pretty good data visualization.

Overall I give this a B because there are a few minor things that I would suggest changing or adding to improve it. One big general suggestion I have is to shrink this down and get rid of some of the unused space; at its current full size viewers have to scroll down a lot and there is plenty of empty space that could be put to use. Another suggestion I have is for the two statistics that are presented in pie chart-like form; the pictures that represent those two statistics don’t really tell the reader anything without the text so I suggest adding more relevant graphics or changing this somehow.

I do think the graphics for the other statistics work pretty well and give at least a good general idea about the statistics that the bars represent. I also like the bottom statistic about educational travel making people a better global citizen. The picture of a stick figure holding up a globe is a good representation of this. I think that the statistics that are just in clouds could be represented better visually in a way that is specific to each fact.

The overall appearance and balance between text and graphics on this infographic is nice. With a few minor adjustments the infographic could have much better data visualization and therefore be a better IG overall.

Lebseo Design submitted this infographic to us.

The data here does a great job of conveying exactly what it’s supposed to. The information is extremely focused, which keeps the viewer on track and lets them get through the IG quickly–and that’s the point. (Of course, I spent a long time staring at the age distribution charts, but not because I didn’t understand them. I just thought they were really innovative and useful.) The cubic flags are also pretty visually interesting. It was really interesting to be able to follow the trends by country, and to see that 18-25 is the most Facebook-entrenched age range in both men and women in all countries.

If anything, the design is a touch drab. I think I was so fascinated by the age distribution charts because they were among the most unique data viz here, and because the font choice and extremely plain background weren’t particularly enticing. It gets a little overly blue from the age charts downward, too, which instills sort of a visual monotony. The data viz really is great, and there is absolutely no purposeless text on this infographic, but a little something to break it up might be nice. All the data viz stretches to the borders, so there’s no room to mix it up. A couple of text facts or smaller charts and graphs thrown in might actually provide the spice this infographic needs.

In summary, what’s here is great, if a little visually repetitive, but a little size and info variation could benefit the infographic overall. I’d give this infographic a B: it’s doing its job, so now it just needs a makeover.

This infographic comes to us from the folks at Cruise Deals.

I like the layout of this a lot, it is divided up in easy to understand sections that present the information very visually. There is not too much text and there are lots of images that are understandable without needing captions or descriptions.

Overall I give this a B+. I really like the way that this infographic depicts amenities of the different types of cruise ships. The pictures show the reader exactly what they can expect to find on a cruise ship and I like how there are different colors for different categories; yellow for food and drink, blue for entertainment, and red for physical activities. Separating cruise amenities into river cruise and ocean cruise types is a nice touch as well. The river cruise section separates amenities between the river cruiser and the city which is a nice touch.

There are a couple of suggestions I have to improve this infographic. At the beginning there are pictures of the different sizes of cruiser and then a figure that says fares run from $99-$100,000. That is a pretty wide range and I think it would be nice if it was broken down into smaller ranges for each of the different types of cruise ships. Another suggestion I have is to change how the world maps look, or at least change the colors of the continents because the blue on blue on blue tends to blend together. I do like the features of the maps that highlight popular destinations, but again the look of these could be changed to make them stand out more.

The overall flow of this infographic is nice and has good data visualization, the colors are a little bit too blue-heavy but given the topic it makes sense. A few minor changes could really add a lot to this.

This infographic was submitted to us by UltimateCoupons.com. It has a nice all-American color scheme going on, which is very appropriate considering it contains data regarding the “American Vacation”. I especially like the use of yellow as an addition to the traditional red, white, and blue scheme. It works well because it brings to mind sunshine (something most of us like to see when on vacation).

There is some data-visualization in this infographic, however, not nearly enough considering the amount of information given. It would be extremely difficult to decipher statistics from this graphic if all the text was removed. With that said, I think the typography used throughout this graphic is very visually pleasant.

The graphic also flows really well- for the most part. I’m not sure about the final statistic about shark attacks because it seems a little disconnected from the theme of the rest of the information. Perhaps this shark attack data could be used in a separate infographic highlighting information specific to vacations with a beach destination.

Overall I would give this graphic a C. It relies too heavily on typography and missed several opportunities for data-visualization. But, it tells a nice story with the information used, up until the very end with the shark attack data. With a bit more data-visualization and a bit less wordy, this infographic could be a home run.

I like this infographic. How often do I start a post out like that? It’s well designed and does a good job of visualizing the data. It also fits with the topic of the website that produced it, which is hard to find these days. My one and only issue with this infographic is that the font size is super small, so it’s really hard to read, especially on a laptop. This infographic could be an extra 500px in height just to bump up the font size. That said, the color wheel is great, the illustrations are nice, and the way everything is laid out is very easy to take in.

OK, I thought about it while writing this and I have just one more issue: there is too much dead space at the top. Placing the color wheel in the center and the maps above it would solve this problem, because when viewed at full size, the infographic seems too sparse.

When this was submitted by the designer, Leigh Riley, he had the following (very funny) things to say about this infographic:

Design Emperor,
I bow to your visualness!
I have a slick ass kick ass super awesome infographic for your perusal. It’s all about the effects of sunshine and happiness around the world. It was made by über talent Leigh Riley & the team at Arena-Quantum for Fly Thomas Cook.

QUICK OVERVIEW
- Sunshine doesn’t guarantee high quality of life but does bring health, riches and a full night sleep!
- Icelanders may only have an average 3hrs of sunshine per day with their dark winter nights but they live satisfied and long lives!
- South Africa has an average of 10 hours sunshine per day compared to only 6hrs in Canada but Canadians rate their life satisfaction 60% higher.

This infographic, created by MNN, displays the harsh realities of animal and plant extinction rates throughout the world. It begins with a world map, which is meant to display countries with the greatest potential for disaster or improvement. It is assumed that red means disaster and green improvement, though the infographic does not provide a key here, which makes this initial portion hard to fully digest.

Next, it goes on to show the top 20 countries where extinction rates are at their highest. Again, this is assumed, as the infographic does not fully explain that this is what is being shown. The United States is second on the list, and it looks like this is caused by fish and mollusks facing the large amount of threat.

One of the most interesting facts in this infographic is shown near the end, when it states that there are only 3,200 tigers left in the world. To bring this point closer to home, it would be great if the infographic would include a comparison. For instance, there are probably more than 3,200 house cats in most US cities. Adding a fact like that would really display just how close tigers are to full extinction.

Who hasn’t wanted to buy their own private island at least once in their life? This almost unreachable goal is the topic of a new infographic by Iglucruise.com, which provides a detailed “How-to” guide for anyone wanting to make this dream a reality. The infographic offers 4 simple steps including choosing a location, budget, joining the club, or renting. What is great about this infographic is that it shows how owning an island is actually an attainable goal and sheds light onto the reality of this type of venture. One might see the title of an infographic like this and assume that it’s meant to be funny, but it’s actually quite serious.

There are many interesting facts from this infographic, but some of the most eye opening include the following:

The cheapest island sale on record was for only $12,500 in 2009, which is cheaper than almost all brand new cars

There are about 490,000 islands that can currently be sold in the world

The cost of making an island inhabitable is usually 1.5x of mainland projects and takes much longer as well

While this is a very informative infographic, step 3 seems very out of place. They suggest that you “Join the Club,” but don’t explain why. “The Club” is a list of corporate owners (or cruise lines) that own a variety of islands for their cruises. It doesn’t state whether joining these clubs gives you a piece of the island, or if they are just trying to advertise for cruises. As such, it would be nice if this section had more details.
