This infographic was submitted to us by Sinotech.

The dynamic color scheme and clear organization are the standout features of this infographic. There are a few good examples of data viz early on, and the iconography and typography stay simple so as not to confuse or overwhelm the viewer. The design doesn’t try to take on too much information, but we get a good sense of the electric vehicle market and an intro to how these vehicles (and their motors) work.

I do wish the data viz extended throughout the IG, though. The 2011, 2015 and 2020 boxes have no data viz, but plenty of numbers. Under the BLDC motors section, there is the figure “85-90% efficiency,” but the arrow doesn’t portray the percentages. And the very first element of data viz — “43% of U.S. consumers say they’re interested in buying an electric vehicle” — is a little confusing, because I think the 43% is supposed to be represented by the shading on the 5th character, but because there is more than one character there, the visual seems to be saying something like “4.5 out of 5 U.S. consumers” instead. A different visual might convey the message better.

In all I’d give this infographic a B. It’s easy to follow and contains some data viz, but should maximize its potential in that area.

This infographic was submitted to us by Quench, who also provided this description:

Americans are a population that constantly needs our thirst quenched and water still seems to be the most popular drink of choice. According to Beverage Marketing, Americans are ingesting water in greater quantities than ever before, drinking twice as much water than they were a decade ago. This increase has led to a total of 91 billion gallons of water consumed last year which is an astronomical amount. Unfortunately, despite the increased amount of water consumption, the fact of the matter remains that most common drinking sources are still risky or insufficient in quality in spite of our technological advances. Thankfully most of us don’t have to face dreadful drinking circumstances but it is still up to debate whether or not our water is actually adequate.

This infographic features clean design and clear data visualization, telling its story with small bursts of text and enough illustration, iconography, and white space to digest the information without getting bored. The color palette is pleasing and consistent and there are some interesting facts within. With a bit more attention to proofreading, this infographic would be great!

There are a couple of instances of typos or odd phrasing that seem to have been missed when proofing this infographic. Under “Problem #2,” the text is off. “This list of contaminants commonly appears in water.” It’s a phrasing issue that makes it sound like the list itself is in the water… “This is a list of contaminants that commonly appear in water” would be preferable, or “This list of contaminants shows some nasty ingredients in your drinking water” — something like that. There’s also inconsistency between “anti-microbial” and “anti microbial” (although actually it’s “antimicrobial”), and under “UV Sanitization,” “filers” should be “filters.” Infographics need to be polished in both design and copy, so proofreading before publishing is a critical step.

In all I’d give this infographic a B+. Great data, nice clean visualization and design, but some attention to detail would take this to the next level.

There’s a lot going on here visually; I suppose that works well because of the imagery-based topic, though! This offers great tips for any photographer (or aspiring photographer) looking to expand their horizons in extreme settings. This design does a great job of keeping text light and engaging the reader with interesting visuals.

Because this is more instructional than data-focused, it’s difficult to judge as an infographic. Infographics are characterized by telling a story and replacing data with visuals. Again, since this more text tips, it doesn’t really lend itself to the data visualization that a traditional infographic would have. However, it is a quick and easy way to give someone ideas for how to adapt to field conditions and what to prepare before you get there.

As an infographic I’d give this a C for lack of visualized/visualizable data, but as a tool for extreme photographers, an A! It could be cool to have a depth chart on the underwater section for the ideal depth vs. how deep the featured camera can go, or for wildlife how many photos a NatGeo photographer takes in one shoot (or something along those lines).

This infographic was submitted to us by Rick’s Fencing.

This is a quick and easy way to learn about what common dangers are threatening your fence. The iconography adds some interest, the woodgrain fence background spruces things up (no pun intended!) and the photo at the center is, well, a really nice looking wood residential fence!

There is only one example of data viz (post holes being two feet deep) but there’s only really one opportunity for it, anyway. We encourage numbers-based data and data visualization, so any further research into the percentage of fences that have to be rebuilt due to A, B and C would be interesting to know, or the average lifespan of a fence.

Although this infographic relies primarily on text to tell its story, I wouldn’t necessarily call it text-heavy, which is good. Graphics should shoulder the majority of the story whenever possible, but instances of text should remain short, and this infographic accomplishes that pretty well.

I also appreciate a well-proofread infographic, and this one does a pretty darn good job of it. The only thing I noticed is that the second Weather bulletpoint lacks a period at the end.

All in all I’d give this infographic a B-: it’s clean and does its job. But as a tool for assessing the hardiness of your fence, it gets an A. If I didn’t live in an apartment several floors up, I’d be checking my own fence for these hazards!

This infographic was submitted to us by BuellWetsuits.com, who should certainly know a thing or two about shark attacks!

There’s a lot of great data here that snorklers, divers, swimmers, surfers, sailors, parasailors etc. could find quite useful. It’s definitely good to know that it’s quite unlikely you’ll be killed by a shark attack–but unsettling that the rate of fatality is on the rise! The shark illustration is also pretty darn cute.

I’d like to see a little more visual organization, though. In some spots (Scientists Have Defined Two Types of Shark Attacks; We Cannot Eliminate the Possibility…), the subtitles/transitional text aren’t emphasized, making the text look even, shall I say, “textier”? Text can effectively kill an infographic when it just looks chunky/long, and it really doesn’t take much at all to look text-heavy. For instance, Sneak Attack: only two short sentences, but four and a half lines of text!

Also, there are so many opportunities for data viz, but only one of them (Global Shark Attack Activity) is used! The map is sort of an attempt at data viz, but there’s nothing to visually show the proportion between confirmed and fatal attacks–the division of blue and red is equal for each continent.

If there were more data viz and a bit more attention paid to organization, this infographic would be significantly approved. As is, I’d give it a C.

Stay safe in those waters!

This infographic was submitted to us by ReuseThisBag.com

There’s a lot of great information about the declining state of the world’s oceans here. It provides great insight from a list of threats to in-depth examinations of the biggest offenders. The colors are great and the design is clean, so it’s easy to follow. I feel like I have a really good sense of the topic after looking this over.

What’s bogging this IG down is lots of text! It’s doing a lot of explaining and not enough showing. Some opportunities for data viz are missed–right at the beginning, there are 2 great stats that don’t get a chance to shine with visualization. (The Global Decline of Tuna Populations graph, however, is outstanding!) Any amount of text on a graphic is going to look pretty heavy in comparison to the white space around it, especially because of the justification of most of it–for example, the factoid about ghost nets is smooshed into 2/3 of the width of the graphic, so visually it ends up looking daunting. It looks like a whole paragraph, though it’s only 2 sentences, so my eye just wants to glaze over it. Infographics are about seeing the information, not reading it.

But again, I love the design and the way the data viz that is on the graphic is represented. If we could cut down on the text and bump up the data viz quotient, this would be fantastic. (And if we could protect our oceans from all the damage we do to them, with overfishing, littering and polluting, the world would be a better place! We could start by reducing our littering in general–do you know how much plastic is in the ocean? Reusable bags alone just might save the world…)

With all that in mind, I give it a B for now!

We designed this infographic for YourMesotheliomaLawFirm.com, so it wouldn’t be fair to say this infographic has some great examples of data viz and looks like it was designed by someone we’d like to be friends with. (But we said it anyway.)

Here’s a description they provided, too:

“Did you know that asbestos is the largest cause of occupational cancer in the United States, and that we still import tons of this lethal material? What’s more, it doesn’t take much asbestos exposure to inhale or ingest enough asbestos and start the process towards developing mesothelioma, asbestosis, or another asbestos-related disease like lung cancer. In fact, some mesothelioma patients are the wives of men who worked with asbestos, who brought the tiny, deadly fibers home on their clothing, skin, and hair. Just this limited amount of asbestos exposure was enough to lead to a mesothelioma diagnosis decades later.”
Still, let us know your thoughts!

This infographic was submitted to us by Bayan.

This is appropriately sparse in design. Since it’s addressing serious issues, including drought and malnutrition, I think it couldn’t get away with being any more crowded, and it certainly couldn’t use brighter colors or gimmicky illustrations. There’s a pretty good amount of data viz on here, and plenty of vital information besides. It’s very effective in telling its story and ending on the “what can be done” note.

There are places where data viz would’ve fit in fine, but for some reason it wasn’t employed. 800 people fleeing daily, 440,000+ refugees has no visual to go with it, while 45,000 tents displays images of tents, but they do not fit any sort of scale.

Also, the 1,500 refugees arriving daily is visualized, but there’s no scale given. We just see that more come from Nairobi than Mombasa, and more from there than Dadaab. A percentage or number from each would be helpful.

On a typo note, the distribution of people in need in Somalia seems in places to refer to people (Somali, Somali refugees) and in others to refer to countries (Kenya, Djibouti). That should be standardized.

Aside from those notes, this is a really well-done infographic. It’s difficult to read not because of the design or the typography, but the severity of the data. I’m glad there is a positive ending to the IG–it not only rounds out the story with the “what’s next”/“what can you do” portion that should be included in all infographics, but gives a bit of hope to an infographic about a desperate situation.

I’d give this infographic a B+. It was conscious of design and subject matter, contains lots of valuable data and visualized nearly everything available to visualize. There’s no unnecessary text or distracting imagery.

This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at ReachTEL. They included this description:

ReachTEL has conducted a poll of over a thousand Queenslanders’ asking them about the coal-seam gas industry. In addition to the CSG questions, we asked for State voting intentions. The polling was conducted nationally on Tuesday night (16th August) using our fully automated voice broadcast market research capabilities. This gives us the ability to have audited research results back in our customer’s hands in literally hours instead of days or even weeks.

The data is very clearly displayed here. There’s no ambiguity about the questions or responses, and no filler data. We see which party is the most popular overall and the varying opinions within each party on particular issues of coal-seam gas and other environmental concerns. It’s nice that the colors for each answer remain the same throughout, so there’s a unity and continuity to the data that allows for even simpler interpretation.

Design-wise, this infographic is quite plain. An infographic should be inviting and interesting to look at, but the designer here displayed the information in rather muted tones and simple structure. All of the data is displayed in the same size and type of pie chart throughout. Designers should take advantage of the graphic medium to go “outside of the box,” as it were. It is possible to make a unique and engaging design that is still clear to viewers.

Overall I’d give this infographic a C. It is telling a story, there isn’t too much text, and data viz is definitely employed throughout. However, it’s just not eye-catching. It’s extremely basic and, well, average, hence the “C.” Spice it up with a little creative illustrating and maybe a few more points of data–maybe even a sentence or two about the coal-seam gas industry for those who aren’t in the know–and it’ll be well on its way.

This infographic was submitted to us by Iron Mountain. Here is the detailed description they provided:

World Paper Free Day has returned this October reminding us that, despite an increased awareness of the damage caused by excessive paper production, business paper use is still on the rise across the world.

This infographic highlights the key figures showing increased paper use and invites the audience to rethink their companies recycling practices. How many trees could they save?

As a change in attitude is crucial to facilitate improvements, Iron Mountain has surveyed businesses to understand their attitudes to recycling and moving paper out of the office environment through digitising and off-site storage and secure shredding. The infographic contains some key figures to show the range of opinions across Europe.

Finally, it highlights the steps that businesses can take both on an individual and organisational level, to improve, from scanning and digitising their archive to securely shredding documents no longer needed.

This infographic has a lot of great facts and suggestions in addition to nice data-visualization. Had I known October 27th was World Paper Free Day, this infographic would have convinced me to participate. I was pretty surprised by some of the statistics as well. I know there is a lot of paper wasted, but I didn’t know that the amount equaled to the average person printing 45 sheets per day. That seems a bit excessive to me. I particularly like the suggestions and visualization of what people can do to conserve paper.

The entire infographic has a nice flow and stays consistent to the theme of information. I also really like the color scheme- not only does it stand out, but it fits into the earthy/conservation theme as well.

As far as grading this infographic, I would not hesitate to give it an A. It fits all the requirement of a great infographic and I can’t think of any changes that should be made.
