This infographic was submitted to us by Alfred Dunhill.

I love the silhouettes throughout this IG, evoking the imagery of the typical Bond intro credits. I also appreciate that text is kept to a minimum throughout and that although there are several different colors used, they are sectioned off so they don’t look overwhelming all together.

I’m confused about the data viz in the lead section. What are the percentages? Did Bond wear midnight blue fabric 47% of the time? Or did 47% of fans vote for midnight blue as their favorite? What’s the context? I do love the style of the pie charts, though — another classic Bond element.

Although the silhouettes are styled nicely, it’s a little odd that such detail is given about each and every thing Bond is wearing, yet we can’t actually see that detail. Omega ‘Seamaster’ Watch — not pictured. Converse Jack Purcell OTR? Just some olive-green shoe silhouettes. Ralph Lauren brown belt — not only not pictures, but probably wouldn’t be brown if it were. Just seems that silhouettes were used as an aesthetic without considering the value of detail to the piece. Since the concept of the infographic is all about the little details of Bond’s outfits, I think we need to see that.

I DO love the inclusion of the fashion faux-pas though!

In all I’d give this infographic a C. While a lot of effort was made to sneaky in Bond-esque elements, I think in some cases it overshadows the best interest of the infographic. I also need more explanation regarding what the data viz means. But conceptually, I love that there’s an infographic about this topic.

What is the most attended sports league in the world?

Ever wondered what is the most attended sports league in the world is? How about the domestic sporting event that attracts the highest attendace? Today on the blog, we give you some numbers that might help you win a bet at your local pub this weekend.

This is a great list of stats. It’s interesting to see what really are the most popular leagues by sheer audience numbers, though I am surprised that MLB ranks #1 as soccer/football is known as the world’s most popular sport. It seems that folks really come out for the big soccer games, but not as much during the season?

While this is a great set of stats that is set up in an easy-to-read format, the designer didn’t take a chance on visualizing any of the data. This means that we have to read to get the information, rather than just glancing at it. A bar graph could show us proportionally just how many more audience members the MLB’s 73,451,522 attendance is versus the runner-up Nippon Professional Baseball at just 21,679,596. As it is, we have to imagine, or do some calculations to see that that’s over 50,000,000 fewer attendees, or just 29% of MLB’s turnout.

I’d love to see these numbers visualized to make their impact even stronger. Until then, I can’t properly rank this as an infographic. It gets an A for interesting data, though!

“Each one of us has a favorite Reality TV show one way or

the other. We go crazy over our favorite TV show and we always make

it a point to make it part of our daily routine to the point that we

often stole a minute or two in the office to open our PC to watch the

replay online or the episode that we’ve missed during the regular

airing. Luckily for those with TiVo where they could record an

episode and never missed a beat of their favorite TV show while the

rest have to endure some anxious moments whether they could watch the

episode or not. One such show that I am really crazy about is

Survivor. Sometimes I wonder how did these Reality TV shows managed

to hook us into following them! When did these phenomenon started?

In our infographic site, your questions will be answered.”

This is a pictorial timeline, and an interesting one at that–but it isn’t an infographic. There is no data–just text and pictures. It’s also an interesting look at where the line is drawn on “reality TV.” For instance, talk shows like Oprah Winfrey and Jerry Springer seem to be in a different category from those that just follow one set of people around like Jersey Shore and The Real World. Perhaps a definition of what is considered to be “reality TV” within the context of the infographic would be helpful here?

In all I’d give this a B for a timeline and a D for an infographic–it needs data, statistics. What is the viewership of reality TV? What % of people watch 1 reality TV show? 2 shows? 3+? How many of the original “7 Up” kids are still alive? We need numerical factoids for this to become an infographic.

been renewed for a sixth season.’”

This isn’t an infographic in the traditional sense, because there is no data visualization–in fact, there’s almost no visualizable data, except for a few revenue and cost figures and the breast implant surgery factoid. It’s also a little strange that the copy chooses to use the first person in this way: “Personally, I don’t think this is a good thing. At all.” When you say “we” in an infographic, and there’s an obvious logo or company to associate it with, it’s not strange. But “I”–well, who’s “I”? The infographic itself?

This is a cool resource for Mad Men fans though, with details about major characters and some of the ways the show has influenced real-life trends. I’d give it a B for interest but a D as an infographic, since there’s no data at all.

This infographic was submitted to us by Go-Globe.com.

There is a very simple and clean design here, which makes the data stand out without being too confusing. The color scheme is consistent, the data is extremely thorough and the topic is interesting.

The data viz is a bit drab, however, where it exists. In many places it isn’t utilized where it could’ve been. The first section is just calling out for it–circles containing written percentages could so easily be converted into pie charts which, while not very exciting, are better than just writing data. For some reason, the 1% statistic is visualized, but none of the others. It gets a little more creative in sections like “Most Pirated Items on the Web” by using icons, but that’s still not data viz.

I could also use some descriptions on the percentages. China is the “top for online piracy” with 91%… of what? 91% of Chinese people have downloaded illegally? China accounts for 91% of all online piracy? It seems that some places are lacking text while others could remove it effectively.

There’s also some unexplained capitalization throughout. Words like “software” or “online piracy” wouldn’t typically be capitalized mid-sentence. Grammar issues like “42 percent of Softwares running in World are illegally downloaded” are also present.

Overall I’d give this infographic a C. It’s got data viz, but not enough of it, and there are enough technical problems that it looks a little hastily done. A more unique design would also serve this topic well.

This infographic was submitted to us by Slots of Vegas, who had this to say:

“This infographic brings a succulent list of gambling athletes, socialites, actors, A-listers, B-listers, No-listers and obviously one hot beach blonde to spice things up. Trust me. Gambling with celebrities is NOTHING like you see in the movies.”

The majority of this infographic is not actually an infographic–though it is really well-done. I love all the little cartoon bodies on the celebrity heads. My favorite is the human body on Marge Simpson’s head. It’s completely adorable. However, all the descriptions of what the celebrities have been up to are just that: descriptions. There is no data viz to accompany these facts, which makes all the information in the top half exclusively text.

There’s an unfortunate typo up there too–Pamela Anderson allegedly “offered x-rated ‘moves’ to settle a $250 K debt…” Given the video camera at her cartoon feet, it would seem that was meant to say “movies.” Oops!

I’ve got to wonder about the data a bit for the total winnings and what they could buy. If $1,182,000 could buy 9 houses in the United States, that would make each house only $131,333 and change. Maybe in the middle of nowhere houses only cost that much, but in a lot of metropolitan areas, even condos cost much more than this.

Overall I’d give the infographic a C-. Some more data viz and a few more statistics would be nice, but the design is pretty cute and there aren’t many typos or other technical errors. When more data visualization is employed, this will be a pretty engaging example of an infographic.

It’s officially after Thanksgiving. This means that all the pre-Thanksgiving Christmas music you put up with in stores is now replaced by… seasonally appropriate Christmas music. That’s right; it would be difficult for you to complain about the prevalence of holiday music now that the typical shopping season has begun. But to get “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Santa Baby” out of your head, we’ve come up with some infographics about music, video games, movies and other forms of entertainment that will distract you for just a little while longer.

Lady Gaga: The Fame Monster

Okay, admittedly Lady Gaga is considered by some to be at least as bad as Christmas music, if not worse. “Poker Face” is just as likely to get stuck in your head as “Little Drummer Boy.” (Pa-rum-pa-pum-p-p-p-poker face.) But it’s much more danceable, anyway. And it hasn’t been stuck in your head for your entire life, whereas most holiday music is injected into your brain at birth. So give Gaga a chance this year. That way, if you must go shopping, you can just pop in your headphones and shop to the beat of a different drummer.

The Fragmented World of Digital Music

Speaking of Gaga, this IG tells us she’s got the second digitally-best-selling song of 2010 with “Bad Romance” and the fourth best-selling with “Telephone.” With the CD going the way of the dodo, or the cassette tape, digital music is our new medium. Purchase songs individually, or buy whole albums–the only kind of storage space you need is a drive, not a rack of albums. (And since gift cards are so hot these days, you can knock out a great gift for almost anyone on your list by purchasing a gift card or subscription for a digital music service!)

Doctor Who By the Numbers

What better way to say “Happy Holidays” than with the gift of television! (It’s also a good way to say “I’m in denial about the holidays,” as long as you’re watching on DVD, where there are no commercials.) Seasons or entire series of TV shows make great gifts, and they practically wrap themselves. Whichever Dr. Who you consider to be the real one, the show has an undeniable following. You can spend days watching Dr. Who instead of shopping, too! Or, even better, while shopping online.

Call of Duty Franchise

If you’d still like to forget that the holidays are upon us for as long as you can, Call of Duty is a great way to sequester yourself away from the mall rush! That is, if you haven’t foolishly put CoD Modern Warfare 3 on your gift list. Smart gamers pre-ordered and picked up on release day so that they could postpone the holiday craze. Those who’ve asked for it as a gift are crazed for a different reason. But if you’ve already made this n00b mistake, you could always return to an earlier game from the franchise. It’s not like they weren’t successful games or anything. Just look at how many military vehicles you could buy for the price of the franchise!

Kardashian Wedding vs. Average Wedding

Okay, since the time this infographic was created, this relationship has entered the annals of Stupid Celebrity Wedding History. But many of us latch on to celebrities’ lives as an escape from our own, so maybe you follow their weddings with fervor. Even though she’s returning to Ms. from Mrs., we can still marvel at just how extravagant this wedding was–and just how short of a marriage all that spending bought her!

There you have it–distractions from/accompaniments to the holiday shopping rush. Happy pre-holidays!

This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at Brilliance.com, who took a look at the extravagance that was Kim Kardashian’s wedding.

This infographic is a charming baby pink with staggeringly enormous cost implications. A $2 million ring?! Yikes, Kim. $20 million works out to 714 years of work for the average Joe, and she flushed it down in a matter of hours. At least she stayed reasonable with the $13 cloth napkin on the registry. Frivolity aside, this infographic does a pretty good job of packing all the source information into data viz, staying on topic, and putting things into perspective. I really like the comparison of other things $20 million could buy. It’s nice to know that her public release of the information paid for her wedding almost entirely.

The information here is really well organized and nicely laid out. If I could ask for more data viz, I’d like to see visualization of all the things that could be bought for $20 million. I’d love to see 284 new model Lexus sedans (or, more likely, 28.4, with each one representing 10 cars).

I’m also a little confused about the fondant box: “More than 16 tons of fondant is consumed each year in the US. 16 tons.” Maybe a visual was meant to go there, and it was overlooked? Just something to note.

Overall I’d give this infographic a B+. It’s pretty darn informative, tells a complete story and has no unnecessary text–there just seem to be a few errors or missed opportunities holding it back. A couple more instances of data viz would really make this shine! (Get it? Brilliance.com?)

This infographic was submitted to us by Discount Coder.com and they provided this description:

“This infographic looks at just how much of an impact the pure play shopping retailers Asos has had on the internet, and demonstrates how far they have come in a short space of time. Using both revenue and traffic based data, this insightful infographic really breaks down the complexities behind the daily success of Asos.”

There are a couple things I really like about this infographic, including the data-visualization of countries in which Asos consumers reside. I thought it was creative how the designer used flags to mark the distribution of consumers. I also liked the timeline, which shows the history of the online retail store. The infographic does a good job of remaining relevant and telling a story about the company from start to finish. I also appreciated the introduction paragraph at the top- most IG don’t included them, but I find them really helpful, personally.

Although this infographic has some good qualities, there are also a few areas that could use some improvements. One potential quick fix is the background color. It is usually a good idea to stay away from white or black as a background color because they tend to blend into the background color of the website they get posted onto. Secondly, although this infographic contains a lot of relevant information, there is hardly any true data-visualization. They definitely included a lot of pictures, but not pictures that are representative of the data they are placed next to. One statistic that could be easily visualized is the one about how many Facebook fans and how many daily visits they receive.

Overall, I would give this infographic a C. It has some great aspects, but it also needs a few tweaks. With a different background color and some more data-viz, it could be great.

This infographic was submitted by Certification Map.

This has an adorable, refrigerator magnet aesthetic. The stars all over are pretty clever, considering the stars/celebrities double meaning. It’s interesting to see all the different ways celebrities give back to the educational community. I also love the superhero font used for Shakira and Will Smith’s contributions.

There’s no data visualization on this inforgraphic. While it provides a clear picture of some of the most notable educational donations by celebrities, the graphic is mostly text and illustrative images rather than charts and graphs. Take Oprah’s contribution:

“Value: $40 Million–TV host Oprah Winfrey opened her Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa in 2007, which houses and educates 300 students for free.”

That’s a double-whammy opportunity–the designer could have chosen an icon to represent a million dollars, thrown 40 of them onto the infographic, and then taken a similar tactic for the number of students. Things like this ensure that the infographic is being seen, not read.

In order to take the story of this infographic a step further, maybe there could have been a few statistics about domestic or global need for funding assistance for education. It would help to round out the perception of the donations and also show that there is always a need for contributions in this area.

Ultimately, without data visualization, this can’t be considered a true infographic, and it gets a C- on the scale. Once a designer takes some of the information within and makes it into something that can be taken in quickly instead of read through, it will be much better.
