This infographic was submitted to us by Rosetta.

This infographic shows off some great design skills and a whole lot of insight into what goes on in a presidential campaign. The red and blue color coding works perfectly for keeping the candidates’ relative statistics distinct, and the wide variety of points of comparison works through a complete set of data. I wish there was a conclusion or summary statement of some sort, though, instead of just ending on the piece of info that happened to be the last.

I really enjoy the illustration throughout, and it helps break up the text. I do feel that each component of the IG could be explained in fewer words, though. It’s also inconsistent whether the data viz is explained before or after the data is displayed, so I get a little lost trying to connect the explanations to the graphics sometimes. The best example is for Organic Search Results: the explanation is below the search results, but above the key for color coding, and is in its own bar across the IG with its own shade of grey. To me that read as a section separation rather than a unifying element, so it took a second to line everything up.

As endearing as all the illustrations are (I really love to see infographics that take big risks with lots of visual interest), I read through the IG a few times and don’t really think the “spooky” theme fits. There’s nothing that ominous about the data itself; it isn’t revealing dark secrets about the candidates or making scary predictions. It feels a bit like the theme was chosen just for the IG to be released around Halloween, rather than it being related to the information. I wish it had been tied in a bit more closely, which would have driven up the humor factor for the IG too.

In all I’d give this infographic a B. A little bit of work on organization and a clearer sense of theme would help this out a lot!

This infographic was submitted to us by Viking Direct.

This is a really interesting compilation of the prohibited and restricted items for shipping in various countries. The iconography is great and the map background fits in really well. Although the map is quite busy, the simplicity of the overlaid “stamps” makes order out of chaos. There’s only one section of visualizable data but it works well — it’s interesting to see that pasta is the #5 most prohibited item!

This IG does a great job of keeping the design interesting, organized and aligned with the theme. I’d love to see a little more data incorporated, although the long list of countries (15 and mainland Europe, not the 10 listed at the top!) takes up a lot of space already.

The final section is a little odd with regards to the alignment of the Xs and check marks. On some, they overlap, but on others they don’t touch. A little consistency here would make it less visually jarring; standardizing the length of the text in this section would be an ideal way to help with this.

In all I’d give this a B as an infographic, because I’d like to see some more visualizable data thrown in and a bit of a cleaner execution on the final section. Definitely an interesting topic to tackle though — now I’ll know where not to ship spaghetti!

This is a good example of a “short and sweet” infographic that tells its story quickly and clearly.

I love the lead-in with the arrows and globe, followed by a clear assortment of data viz to effectively tell the story without many words. This information lets people know that their EB-5 applications are more likely than ever to be denied, and that 2012 is on a fast track to become the busiest year for EB-5s in sheer volume of applicants.

While the design itself is relatively plain, I think it’s appropriate for the topic. I do wonder why the data viz isn’t featured more prominently, though. The dominant images are the globe and the hand with the Visa. I’d like to see the graphs in a larger format to place emphasis on the information instead of the icons.

A little more data overall wouldn’t hurt, either. What % of applicants are male or female? What’s the average age of applicants? Are there peak months for applications? The goal isn’t a long scrolling piece but a bigger picture — a more comprehensive story.

Infographics are intended to tell a story, but this one is more an explanation of the company and a few choice stats inserted. A little more info could help round this out into something great.

Overall I’d give this infographic a B. Great simple design and low on text, but could be filled out a little, and more consideration given to the proportions of the respective elements.

This infographic was submitted to us by ReuseThisBag.com

There’s a lot of great information about the declining state of the world’s oceans here. It provides great insight from a list of threats to in-depth examinations of the biggest offenders. The colors are great and the design is clean, so it’s easy to follow. I feel like I have a really good sense of the topic after looking this over.

What’s bogging this IG down is lots of text! It’s doing a lot of explaining and not enough showing. Some opportunities for data viz are missed–right at the beginning, there are 2 great stats that don’t get a chance to shine with visualization. (The Global Decline of Tuna Populations graph, however, is outstanding!) Any amount of text on a graphic is going to look pretty heavy in comparison to the white space around it, especially because of the justification of most of it–for example, the factoid about ghost nets is smooshed into 2/3 of the width of the graphic, so visually it ends up looking daunting. It looks like a whole paragraph, though it’s only 2 sentences, so my eye just wants to glaze over it. Infographics are about seeing the information, not reading it.

But again, I love the design and the way the data viz that is on the graphic is represented. If we could cut down on the text and bump up the data viz quotient, this would be fantastic. (And if we could protect our oceans from all the damage we do to them, with overfishing, littering and polluting, the world would be a better place! We could start by reducing our littering in general–do you know how much plastic is in the ocean? Reusable bags alone just might save the world…)

With all that in mind, I give it a B for now!

We designed this infographic for YourMesotheliomaLawFirm.com, so it wouldn’t be fair to say this infographic has some great examples of data viz and looks like it was designed by someone we’d like to be friends with. (But we said it anyway.)

Here’s a description they provided, too:

“Did you know that asbestos is the largest cause of occupational cancer in the United States, and that we still import tons of this lethal material? What’s more, it doesn’t take much asbestos exposure to inhale or ingest enough asbestos and start the process towards developing mesothelioma, asbestosis, or another asbestos-related disease like lung cancer. In fact, some mesothelioma patients are the wives of men who worked with asbestos, who brought the tiny, deadly fibers home on their clothing, skin, and hair. Just this limited amount of asbestos exposure was enough to lead to a mesothelioma diagnosis decades later.”
Still, let us know your thoughts!

This infographic was submitted to us by the folks at ReachTEL. They included this description:

ReachTEL has conducted a poll of over a thousand Queenslanders’ asking them about the coal-seam gas industry. In addition to the CSG questions, we asked for State voting intentions. The polling was conducted nationally on Tuesday night (16th August) using our fully automated voice broadcast market research capabilities. This gives us the ability to have audited research results back in our customer’s hands in literally hours instead of days or even weeks.

The data is very clearly displayed here. There’s no ambiguity about the questions or responses, and no filler data. We see which party is the most popular overall and the varying opinions within each party on particular issues of coal-seam gas and other environmental concerns. It’s nice that the colors for each answer remain the same throughout, so there’s a unity and continuity to the data that allows for even simpler interpretation.

Design-wise, this infographic is quite plain. An infographic should be inviting and interesting to look at, but the designer here displayed the information in rather muted tones and simple structure. All of the data is displayed in the same size and type of pie chart throughout. Designers should take advantage of the graphic medium to go “outside of the box,” as it were. It is possible to make a unique and engaging design that is still clear to viewers.

Overall I’d give this infographic a C. It is telling a story, there isn’t too much text, and data viz is definitely employed throughout. However, it’s just not eye-catching. It’s extremely basic and, well, average, hence the “C.” Spice it up with a little creative illustrating and maybe a few more points of data–maybe even a sentence or two about the coal-seam gas industry for those who aren’t in the know–and it’ll be well on its way.

This infographic was submitted to us by the good people at GPlus.com, who had this to say:

“We’ve heard the rhetoric from both sides of the aisle about the relationship between tax rates and job growth. Some argue that increasing tax rates on top earners will hamper entrepreneurial activity and destroy jobs. Others contend that trickle-down economics simply don’t work. Here’s a look at who is saying what about one of the biggest policy debates in America today, and the historical data they are using to back up their contentions.”

We get a good look at that rhetoric on this infographic, providing a nice balance of Republican and Democratic positions on taxation. It’s sort of like a debate translated into an IG. But unfortunately, the rhetoric dominates all else. There’s only one graph, one example of data viz, on this infographic. The Clinton and Reagan summaries at the bottom provide another chance–the median family income increase and marginal income tax decreases of Reagan and the tax increase and job creation of Clinton could definitely have been converted into graphs or charts.

The debate section can definitely be left in, but to justify it, the infographic would have to get a bit longer and add more numbers. As it stands now, the proportions are sort of reversed of the way we’d like to see it: switch the amount of text with the amount of data and you’ve got a well-distributed infographic.

Overall I’d give this infographic a C–it’s making a good effort and telling some valuable information, but it isn’t quite bursting with the right type of information for an infographic.

This infographic was submitted to us by Visible Technologies.

Good organization, clean design and an attractive color palette make this infographic pretty appealing. It’s quite well put together visually, and has lots of fine details that make it interesting to look at. All the fine lines remind me of those on money. There are thorough explanations of every term and event, making this a true “idiot’s guide.” If you didn’t know anything about Standard & Poor’s going in, you do now.

There are extremely valid reasons why this infographic should be text heavy… but unfortunately, it’s completely overrun by text. The designer tried to overcome this by adding a sort of line graph for the different ratings and a winding timeline for “How Did We Get Here,” but this infographic is all about reading. There are no percentages, no numbers… nothing that’s a candidate for data viz, and that’s a problem for infographics. The only number seems to be the $5 trillion that was added to our national debt between the years 2001 and 2008.

(Quick note: in the first paragraph is written United State’s where it should be United States’.)

Some ideas of information to add that would lend itself to data viz: the percentage of countries with each credit rating, the country with the longest number of years at AAA rating, the countries with most and least amount of debt, national debt in proportion to GDP… there are lots of opportunities to be had to break up the monotony of all the text. This might make this what we call a “super infographic,” because all of the text serves a pretty good purpose, but it would make it just that much more informative and tell that much more of a complete story. As is it’s beautiful, but it’s just too much text with no balance, and I’d give this infographic a C.
