Some skin problems may be aggravated by the food we eat! Get a look at what could be causing problems.

The blood sugar spike from sugary snacks boost insulin production — higher insulin levels may increase acne, though it’s debated. Sugar could damage collagen and
elastin, which keep your skin tight. Try whole grains instead of white bread, and fruit instead of processed sugars.

Dehydrating ingredients like alcohol, caffeine, and salt can dry out your skin. Try low-caffeine tea instead of coffee, produce with high water content, minimal alcohol,
and be sure to rinse canned foods.

Conventional dairy products (milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt) contain hormones that may aggravate acne and inflammation. Instead, you can get vitamin D and calcium from broccoli, dark leafy greens, and sardines.

Fatty foods can throw off our balance of omega-3 and omega-6 (we get too much omega-6 from processed fats). Eat more omega-3-rich fish and eggs, walnuts,
flaxseed, and extra virgin olive oil.

For healthy, glowing skin, you can certainly use a moisturizing cream (http://www.korres.ca/products/category/moisturising), but healthy foods can help out, too! Increase your intake of vitamins E and C, antioxidants, and beta carotene.

Make your own skin treatments with honey and egg whites! And remember — if your whole body is healthy, your skin can be, too.

This infographic was submitted to us by Bank of America. They also provided this description:

Supporting hunger relief programs is a top priority for Bank of America. They have been working to end hunger since 2008 with donations and volunteering.

This graphic has some cute illustrations and showcases a lot of great information. We get a great overview of how much the company is doing to fight hunger and food insecurity in the United States. Plenty of iconography is used to illustrate the points being made… but what I’d love to see is all these excellent numbers effectively visualized.

16 million pounds of food could be shown as 16 ears of corn — or 1 ear of corn representing 1 million pounds of food, next to another ear of corn (the one on the scale) 16x larger than the first ear. Similarly, the 5 million pounds of fresh produce out of 16 million total could be shown as five fruits and vegetables, while the remaining 11 could be boxes, cans, juice, milk, etc. For the Mt. Everest comparison, it’d be great to see 6.95 containers (one for every hundred containers) or even 69.5 small containers (one for every 10 containers) stacked up next to or against Mt. Everest.

The point of data visualization is to take the written number and translate it into something that can be understood with the eye, without reading. That way, the only necessary reading would be of a key, or a brief descriptor for context. If that were introduced into this infographic, it would be an even more powerful way of showcasing the important numbers.

As an infographic, I’d have to give this a C-, because there’s no data visualization. However, the text-light data, rich with numbers and possibilities to include data viz, makes it a great candidate for improvement!

This infographic was submitted to us by Quench, who also provided this description:

Americans are a population that constantly needs our thirst quenched and water still seems to be the most popular drink of choice. According to Beverage Marketing, Americans are ingesting water in greater quantities than ever before, drinking twice as much water than they were a decade ago. This increase has led to a total of 91 billion gallons of water consumed last year which is an astronomical amount. Unfortunately, despite the increased amount of water consumption, the fact of the matter remains that most common drinking sources are still risky or insufficient in quality in spite of our technological advances. Thankfully most of us don’t have to face dreadful drinking circumstances but it is still up to debate whether or not our water is actually adequate.

This infographic features clean design and clear data visualization, telling its story with small bursts of text and enough illustration, iconography, and white space to digest the information without getting bored. The color palette is pleasing and consistent and there are some interesting facts within. With a bit more attention to proofreading, this infographic would be great!

There are a couple of instances of typos or odd phrasing that seem to have been missed when proofing this infographic. Under “Problem #2,” the text is off. “This list of contaminants commonly appears in water.” It’s a phrasing issue that makes it sound like the list itself is in the water… “This is a list of contaminants that commonly appear in water” would be preferable, or “This list of contaminants shows some nasty ingredients in your drinking water” — something like that. There’s also inconsistency between “anti-microbial” and “anti microbial” (although actually it’s “antimicrobial”), and under “UV Sanitization,” “filers” should be “filters.” Infographics need to be polished in both design and copy, so proofreading before publishing is a critical step.

In all I’d give this infographic a B+. Great data, nice clean visualization and design, but some attention to detail would take this to the next level.

This infographic was submitted to us by Nationwide Bank.

I like the simple layout and flow of this infographic. It’s not a challenge to decide what to look at next and the color scheme isn’t overbearing; it’s actually very simple but with subtle oranges and browns, with the icons providing extra visual interest.

We’re introduced to a little data viz in Turkey by the Numbers (one turkey for every two people = better get eating!) and it continues through. There are a few instances that could’ve been visualized (56% of drivers go at least 100 miles, and average is 214) but overall the designer did a good job with it.

Even though there are no individual spots where I feel the text is too long, the infographic begins to feel a little weighty at the bottom, starting around Myth Busting. There are never more than 2 sentences next to each other, but the nature of an infographic ensures that just 2 sentences can take up 4 or 5 lines and end up looking like more than they are. Breaking up these instances with larger icons or data viz can disrupt the feeling of too much text.

In all I’d give this infographic a B. It’s got plenty of data to tell its story without becoming overwhelming and it’s well organized. I would just give a bit more thought to the appearance of text and creating a little more visual interest with more illustrations and/or data viz throughout.

This infographic was submitted to us by Travel Indochina: Share the Experience.

This is a great example of innovative design and unique data visualization. It took me awhile to notice, but each beer bottle for each country is filled proportionally according to how much beer is consumed per capita. Granted, it’d be easier to notice this without the beer labels–but the label plays an important role in identifying popular local beers. Perhaps if the beer cap bore the logo of the local beers, the level of beer would be more visible, and the liter measurement could simply be written in the beer.

There’s not a wide variety of data here, but because there are so many countries covered I think consistency is a good tactic. I’m curious about the rationale for the ordering of the countries (and especially the recap at the bottom). Instead of progressing from most to least or least to most, it jumps around, making it difficult to get the best visual comparison. I think seeing the progression from .002 liters all the way up to 45 would be more compelling.

I’d also like to see maybe just a bit more visual interest within each section, and a slight reduction in text. I like the information presented, but 6+ lines of text can look very heavy in an infographic; a sentence or two appears to be a long paragraph because of spacing. The IG is also incredibly long at nearly 11,000 pixels — cutting down on text would cut down the space needed to convey the info, as would scaling down the country names, size of beer bottles etc.

That said, these are picky notes. Overall I return back to the clean, unique design and data viz to give this infographic an A-. It tells its story quite clearly; all it could really use is a bit less text and some further consideration to organization.

This infographic was submitted to us by Espresso Machine Advisor.com, who also included this description:

“Coffee has been a popular drink since the 1700s and is now the second most traded commodity in the world. But it’s expensive on the high street! Did you know that if you bought a 200 dollar espresso machine and had one coffee everyday instead of buying it from a coffee shhop you would break even in less than 3 months?”

This infographic has some pretty interesting information, and is pretty cute all on a coffee sleeve. It’s pretty simple but easy to get through, although it is fairly text-heavy. The illustrations are nice, and there is some data viz (I like the subtle pie chart in the cup of coffee when talking about coffee consumption at breakfast), but in all there isn’t very much of it.

For instance, the $12.2 billion in specialty coffee is just represented by a pile of money (and the 75% in coffee shops is practically ignored), and while I like the illustration of a “barrel of coffee”, something more like the coffee cup vs. cola can graph at the top of the IG would be more data viz-friendly. It would be especially good if maybe a few more of the world’s top commodities made it onto the graph, too.

The stat about the average price of an espresso drink was interesting. It must be factoring in espressos and Americanos, though, since I’d imagine the average price of a latte would be quite a bit higher–depending, of course, on the size of the drink!

Overall I’d give this infographic a C: it needs less text and more data viz to be a great infographic.

This infographic was sent to us by Cell Pig.com and this is what they had to say about it:

An interactive infographic exploring why pigs are the most amazing creatures in nature. From 7 minute miles to 30 minute orgasms, these animals can do a lot that humans never knew.

There are a lot of interesting facts about pigs in the infographic and some pretty funny data-viz (Pig smoking a cigarette? Priceless). I particularly liked the lengthy comparison of male humans and pigs. I was actually pretty surprised that pigs can run an average 7 minute mile–you don’t usually associate pigs with running, or anything else that would be considered “healthy”. It was sad for me to see that pigs are the fourth most intelligent animal seeing how they are treated by food corporations. I also would have never guessed that they were smarter than dogs or cats. All very interesting data.

This infographic also had some nice visualization of data with the little Piglets representing how many babies a sow can give birth to within a year. I also liked the way the “Pig Anatomy” represented what parts of a pig are used for what types of food. The infographic stayed true to the theme throughout and had a nice flow. I didn’t feel bombarded by too much information, I was able to read through the infographic with ease.

I would give this infographic an A- overall. The only reason I wouldn’t give it a solid A is because I wish there was more data visualization. Although there were a couple facts that were nicely visualized, I was left wanting more. A couple of the facts that just included graphics could be improved by exchanging the graphic for a better representation using some sort of graph/chart. Perhaps this could be done with some of the facts about pigs versus male humans. But overall, this is a fun and informative infographic!

This infographic was submitted to us from Fast Casual.com, and this is what they had to say about it on their website:

“Since the economic downturn, the fast casual segment has led the restaurant industry in both sales and unit growth. And it continues to outperform on both fronts. Operators within the segment are innovative, entrepreneurial and unabashed in their passion and zeal for the segment, and to the brands contributing to it.

If you’re still not quite sure what fast casual is, look no further than our fast casual infographic. It defines our four key metrics in determining what makes a fast casual restaurant and breaks down why the segment is so hot. So, is the hype living up to fast casual or is fast casual living up to the hype? My bet is the latter.”

This infographic covers a topic that most of us are familiar with: fast casual dining. It has some really interesting facts, such as how 6 fast casual dining chains were included on Parents Magazine’s list of “10 Best Family Restaurants 2011.” It is also interesting to see that fast casual dining restaurants are the only segment that showed unit growth in 2010, while the segments of full-service and limited-service restaurants lost units.

As far as data visualization goes, this infographic really only includes one true data viz chart. However, the statistics included are all relevant and nicely organized. The information is interesting and easy to understand, but the infographic as a whole is a bit text-heavy and I would like to see some more visualization of facts and statistics.

Overall, I would give this infographic a B. It has a good design and interesting information, but could use some more graphics/data-visualization. With a couple minor additions, this infographic would deserve an A.

This infographic comes to us from MAT@USC.

This is an awesome infographic that not only looks great but has a very good balance between text and data viz. There is a lot of creativity in this that I really appreciate and that works well with the topic of childhood obesity.

I give this an A because of the good data visualization and the story that it tells. It held my attention and there are too many good elements of it for me to list all the ones that I like, so I’ll cover some of my favorites. To start off, I really like the pie charts at the beginning that are made out of… pie! The next graphic, showing one in five infants drink soda, is nice too, because the contrast between baby bottles and the soda bottle is easy to understand. A couple more good elements are the ten forks with broccoli on three to show the number of high schoolers who eat vegetables daily and the three sports balls with one video game controller showing that one out of four kids doesn’t participate in any kind of physical activity.

There are a few places where the graphics don’t tell the whole story that the text is telling. For example, the vending machine section could be improved by having some sort of image representing each level of school that the data refers to. Also the statistic that two out of three high schoolers drink some sort of sweetened beverage every day could be more visually represented by putting, say, one water bottle next to two sports drink bottles.

Overall, this is a great infographic that really tells a story about childhood obesity. The design and graphics look good and are perfect for the topic. A few minor improvements and this would get an A+!
