This infographic was submitted to us by My Voucher Codes. They also provided a description:

In celebration of this year’s Valentine’s Day, My Voucher Codes has delved deep into the romantic mind-set of the UK, creating an infographic to demonstrate just how loved up and spend-happy us Brits really are. In a poll of 2,446 people, we uncovered statistics to show which cities are more inclined to splash out on loved ones, the most popular types of gift – as well as how couples and singletons plan to spend the day. Are we a country of sentimental souls, or do we simply give in to commercial hype? We’ll leave it up to you to decide.

This infographic has some good examples of data viz (a heart pie chart!) and is packed full of statistics. It’s a very clean and well-organized infographic, so it’s simple to browse straight through it without stumbling on anything confusing. I learned a lot about Valentine’s Day in the UK!

I feel that the top portion of the infographic (from the title through the “Biggest Romance Spenders” section) could be more visually engaging, though. Since the background is busy throughout, it’d be easy to go overboard, but I think something a little less subtle than the heart tag with the word “by” would help draw the reader in. There’s ample use of iconography later in the IG, so maybe if some of that were brought up toward the beginning of the graphic, the viewer would be more inclined to keep looking.

The weight of the Most Romantic and Most Un-Romantic cities is also pretty heavy, since it’s given so much real estate on the design. I think if it were scaled back a touch, that would streamline the flow a bit.

Although there is some data visualization, it’s not utilized to its full potential for the most part. There are only 4 visualized data points/sets even though there’s tons of data, so I’d love to see it brought out a bit more!

In all I’d give this IG a B-. It’s got the idea down — it could just use some more charts, graphs, etc.

This infographic was submitted to us by Beckon Media Inc. in partnership with California Cryobank. They provided this description:

Every year it gets a little more expensive to raise a child. It cost over $200,000 today to raise a child from birth to 17!!

The concept for this infographic is based on the cost of raising a child in 2011 vs. 1960, the first year the U.S. Department of Agriculture first provided estimates of child-rearing expenditures.

The USDA puts out a great Annual Report called Expenditures on Children by Families each year, and after reviewing this document we began focusing on one specific area that sounded very interesting, which was Expenditures on children 1960 versus 2011.

The statistics have been broken down into budgetary components, we have also taken inflation into account by providing the 1960 amounts in 2011 dollars.

Under each budgetary component we have listed a possible expense that a family would incur and compared the cost between 1960 (with inflation) and 2011.

This infographic makes use of very clear data visualization and lots of white space to make the information easily accessible. I like how the pie charts are self-referential: each new “slice” starts where the last “slice” left off, so the viewer can see how much of the total cost of raising a child has already been accounted for by the previously listed costs.

It’s interesting to see all the costs adjusted for inflation — The Game of Life cost more than double what it does today, and Barbie nearly four times more! Since it’s common to reminisce about how cheap things were “back in the good old days,” it’s funny to see that in reality, some things were proportionally much more expensive. Not so for key items like gas, shoes, education, and mortgages, though…

In all I’d give this infographic an A! Although it sticks to traditional pie charts and bar graphs, they’re used to good effect, and the illustrations, data, and overall design style are all quite unique.

The Quicken Loans Skip-A-Year Mortgage Sweepstakes | An infographic by the team at Quicken Loans Racing

This infographic was submitted to us by Quicken Loans Racing.

This infographic is organized pretty clearly, and the message is obvious: what if you didn’t have to pay your mortgage for a year, and what could you do with that money instead? There’s some data viz and a lot of numbers to digest, but the text is kept low and the design clean enough to follow it.

I do wish the “How Could $14,160 Impact Your Financial Future” section was a little more to-the-point, though. It shows how much average debt is, how much all Americans owe, and how long it would take to pay that all off, but there’s no simple correlation to show how much of the average debts would be paid off by not paying mortgage for a year! Looks like it would pay off 53% of the average student debt, 81% of the average car loan, and 91% of the average credit card debt. And instead of showing how many minutes of work it would take to pay off the whole thing, maybe how many minutes or hours of work you’d have left to pay it off afterward? Something to bring the correlation between those numbers and the money/time saved even closer.

I’m also a little unclear on the stacks of money being used as data viz. Without a key, I can’t determine what one stack of money stands for, so I don’t see the relationship between the money and the number. $26,682 has 12 stacks of money (3 stacks, 5 stacks, and 1 stack), $17,433 has 10 stacks of money and $15,587 has 9… That means each stack of money represents, respectively, $2,223.50, $1,743.30, and $1,731.89. Consistency is important for the most effective data viz, so that readers don’t have to examine too closely to get the takeaway.

In all I’d give this infographic a B-. It’s clearly laid out and has a good overall message, but could use a bit more examination to the most effective points of comparison and the most effective use of data viz.

Infographic by EquityRelease.net

This graphic was submitted to us by EquityRelease.net

This is clearly laid out and tries to keep text to a minimum. The style isn’t overwhelming and the flow charts are easy to follow. It’s plenty informative and it ends with a nice example of a simple bar graph.

I do feel like there’s almost too much information here, though. It’s quite long infographic at over 9000 pixels full size, and although the text is not extreme, it does look rather heavy in places (How much will this cost?, Lifetime Mortgage vs Home Reversion Plan). Most of the individual elements are large enough that I can’t view them on my screen at one time. It’s nice to be able to read a chart all the way through without scrolling; perhaps scaling down some of the elements here would help with this.

I like the colors and the comprehensive nature of the information, but I think a bit too much was attempted here, and it winds up being a lot to digest. I’m sure that this infographic simplifies matters quite a great deal when compared to lengthy legal documents, but there should be even less text if possible and more visual representation. The bar graph I mentioned at the beginning is the only example of data viz, and is one of only a few numbers in the data that could be visualized.

As an infographic I’d have to give this a C, because there is only one example of data viz and it is just a whole lot to process, and whole lot of scrolling. Make it smaller and take out a few elements, adding in some visualizable data instead, and this could be a great infographic!

This infographic was submitted to us by 100DayLoansUK.

The clear data viz here is a major plus. It’s really easy to tell what the top answers are, not only by the presence of the data viz istelf but also the orange hue added for emphasis. The fonts are also simple and easy to read, and the style and palette stay consistent.

The doodles and written notes throw me off a little, though. I don’t see how they relate to the rest of the aesthetic — especially the heart with the arrow through it. Maybe if that’s what was in the heart image in the title, it would tie in better. It’s also a bit confusing that both “Borrowers” and “Non-Borrowers” are checked off under “Who Hates Payday Loans the Most?” since later, it’s concluded that Non-Borrowers are the bigger haters.

In all this is a solid infographic with clear data visualization, clear organization and good flow. It also seems to be very well proofread, which is actually pretty rare in the world of infographics! I would give it an A, although it could be fun to upgrade a little bit by using more unique methods of data visualization aside from standard bar charts and circle graphs.

A mini guide to starting your own business by the team at XLN Telecom

This graphic boasts truly eye-catching design, organization and aesthetic. The illustrations feel at-home within the design and the colors stay harmonious throughout, too. Text is kept way down so it’s simple to navigate through this quickly and get all the key information. The only place it gets a bit out of control is the “Cash Flow Management” section.

I wonder about the drop-down “NO” and “YES” for each question in “Have You Got What it Takes?” Typically that would be used if it were a pathway or “choose your own adventure” type of thing… but none of the yesses or nos feed directly into anything else, so it just winds up looking a little needlessly busy in that section.

This is more a guide than it is an infographic, so grading it as one would be unfair. As a tool for those looking to start a business, and as a graphic design, I’d give it an A-. But since there are very few numbers and no data viz, it isn’t a traditional infographic, so I’d give it a C- on that front. More business stats would boost that factor.

In all an enjoyable graphic with refreshing design sense, but again not what we would typically define as an infographic.

Sure, there are plenty of resources, like the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), but few of them are in an easy to read and easy to understand format. In fact, many were downright vague. So we decided it was up to us to create a kitchen remodeling infographic that breaks down what homeowners should expect from their kitchen remodel and what steps they need to take for it to be a success.

I like the fairly simple layout of this infographic. It’s easy for a viewer to first just scroll through and see what they need to consider before launching into the details of each particular section. The illustrations and color add some visual interest.

However, there’s a lot of text here–and the shadowing is extremely distracting. There are some spots where the text length is ideal (albeit with typos), but in most cases it’s just too much. I can see the designer tried to combat this by sectioning the text off into boxes, but reading all of this could take awhile.

I think this infographic could benefit from literally cutting the text in half. Each step on its own may not look like much information, but all together as a 10-step IG, I get intimidated scrolling through. Imagine if every icon within each step was represented by no more than 10-15 words. The design would be able to breathe, viewers could get just about as much information in far less time, and be more likely to read through to the end of the graphic.

In all I’d give this infographic a C. It’s got good info, but could use some design work and truncation to make it great.

This infographic was submitted to us by HomeSecuritySystem.com

I really like the aesthetic of this graphic. Each section is cleverly laid out, it uses a color palette that’s easy on the eyes and it’s easy to navigate. It’s a bit text-heavy but doesn’t go overboard.

We don’t have anything visualized here, though, so I can’t really call this an infographic per se. There are numerous values that could have been visualized–the value of the heists, 10 layers of security, 100 million lock combos, 14 bound members of staff, $650 million out of $920 million recovered, etc. But the viewer has to read all of these numbers instead of getting a visual representation of them through charts, graphs, icons etc. It would be faster to get through the graphic and would also cut down on text if the designer had chosen to visualize these numbers.

I did also want to point out a quick grammatical thing–the sentence “$650 million was later found hidden in walls in Saddam Hussein’s palace by US troops” separates the verb phrase so extremely that it isn’t clear whether the money was found by US troops or hidden by US troops, or even that the palace was near US troops. I was amazed to read that US troops had stolen money and hidden it in Saddam’s palace until I figured out what the sentence was supposed to say!

Overall I’d give this graphic a B, though as an infographic it’d be more of a C or C- given its lack of visualized data.

This infographic was submitted by Robert Half International, who provided this description:

Find out what you’re worth with Robert Half’s salary guides for accounting, finance, technology and administration professionals. Founded in 1948, Robert Half International is the world’s leading specialised recruitment firm and the first to provide placement services for accounting, finance and information technology professionals.

Though this is a very brief infographic–and not that that’s a bad thing–it does a great job of keeping text light, utilizing data viz and staying visually entertaining. It even does this despite the white background and gray accents, maintaining a look of professionalism while being engaging.

It’s clear through both graphs and visual cues which numbers are the most significant. Take the amount CFOs expect salaries to rise–the 34% value is clearly the highest, but it’s also highlighted in blue, making the recognition of its significance instantaneous. The use of iconography mixed with data visualization also spices things up, as in the final graph.

The call to action is well-executed at the bottom, too, not acting as a sales piece but a “learn more here” invitation.

My nit-picky critiques are, well, nit-picky: in the first visualization, I assume that the red characters are representing the 48% that plan to see salaries rise, and the remaining white characters don’t expect salaries to rise. So why is the white character on the end jumping/rising? If anything I think he’d be a bit downtrodden that salaries won’t be rising. Also, in the headline “for those that expect to increase salaries,” I’d think that “for” should be capitalized–and “that” could be changed to “who”. But again, small details. (It’s also a little odd to see the logo at the top and bottom of the infographic, but not outlandish.)

Overall I’d give this infographic an A-! It does its job briefly, doesn’t linger around too long or beat around the bush, and it appears clean and accurate.
