This infographic was submitted to us by Fine Tuxedos, who also provided this description:

Have you ever gone to put on your favorite shirt, only to notice an unpleasant stain or tear that you hadn’t previously noticed? Now imagine if that stain or tear was put there by someone who wore the shirt before you. This is the risk taken every time you rent men’s formal wear. Buy a tuxedo for yourself and make an investment into your wardrobe and your confidence, while spending no more than you would renting. Check out the infographic above to see some of the risks you are taking when you rent your tuxedo!

This is a cute list of the potential hazards of renting a tux. After all, if you think about it, it IS kind of like getting a 100th-generation hand-me-down…

Although the premise is funny, there is no real information for the majority of the graphic. At the bottom we get some hard numbers, but I’d really love to see them visualized. How about a bar chart to show the comparative cost of each item, renting vs. buying? Or pictograms, with one tux/vest/shoe representing every $10 of cost? Infographics are a chance to display info without making the viewer read more than necessary, so I’d love to see that implemented here.

Also, a quick note on sourcing: it looks like the sources are shown for the prices of the tuxedos from the company’s store, but there’s no source for the cost of renting. That makes it hard for the viewer to verify that these price quotes are accurate. Including all of your sources is key to maintaining credibility.

Because of these issues, I can’t particularly grade it as an infographic, so I’ll give it a B for humor and unfortunately a D for data, since it isn’t all verifiable.

This infographic was submitted to us by iSatelliteTV.

There are a few grammatical problems right at the beginning that make it difficult to move forward. “That’s up nearly a 500,000 dollars” doesn’t need the “a,” “Super Bowl” is written as one word immediately next to that, and the market share description for Go Daddy isn’t polished. At first, “Market Share” is treated like a proper noun (yet “super bowl” isn’t properly capitalized), but then “market share” is all lowercase in the next sentence. The typos continue throughout the IG.

Proofreading is a critical step in the creation of any project. When an infographic is shared across the web, it doesn’t positively reflect on your company to present something that’s noticeably flawed. It’s exciting to see a finished design and want to start sharing it, but don’t skip that final step!

As for data visualization, the “Ads of 60+ Seconds in the Super Bowl” would have been an apt place for that. It even seems that the visuals on which the percentages are shown are mimicking circle graphs. However, the length of the outline on the circle is the same for every year, even when the percentages vary. A similar problem occurs in “Advertising Spending Per Year” — it seems to be a bar chart, but the length of the bars simply increases by year, not by how much the spending increased or decreased, so it’s not really doing its job. Quickly changing these so that they reflect the data would be a good direction toward including data visualization.

Also, although there is some diversity in fonts, one of the main ones used is Arial. Arial doesn’t really shine in graphic designs, so with the wide variety of fonts available to us now, it’s generally preferable to branch out a bit.

In all I’d have to give this infographic a D. Although there IS data, it isn’t visualized, and the design and language could use some help, too.

This infographic was submitted to us by Dr. Sofa. They also provided this description:

Are you planning on a home interior renovation and want to do upholstery repairs on some of your furniture? It’s not uncommon to think that sofa reupholstery is easy. You just simply need to take the pieces apart, stuff the foam, sew the new fabric together, and voila – you have a brand new looking sofa – or so you thought. Once you zoom in on the details, you might notice that you’ve missed a few things – loose springs, uneven buttons, popped seams, warped fabric, oversized cushion, damaged wood – okay, so that’s not just a few. That’s why it’s important to consider enlisting the help of professionals when undertaking tasks such as furniture restoration. Not only do they have the proper skills and experience, they also have the right tools and equipment. Before you know it, your furniture looks better than when you first bought it. Why don’t you check out this infographic to learn more about the benefits of professional furniture reupholstery?

This is another instance of a guide that isn’t exactly an infographic. There are no numbers; it’s just a comparison to determine whether you should tackle furniture renovation on your own or enlist a professional. I do like the leather upholstery background texture and the color scheme, and think the guide makes some good points, so as a guide I would give it an A.

I’m not sure what numbers could be added to make this into an infographic — maybe percent of people that prefer DIY to hiring a professional for home projects, or average cost of reupholstering a fabric armchair DIY vs. hiring? But until some data gets in here, it wouldn’t be an IG.

This infographic was submitted to us by Beckon Media Inc. in partnership with California Cryobank. They provided this description:

Every year it gets a little more expensive to raise a child. It cost over $200,000 today to raise a child from birth to 17!!

The concept for this infographic is based on the cost of raising a child in 2011 vs. 1960, the first year the U.S. Department of Agriculture first provided estimates of child-rearing expenditures.

The USDA puts out a great Annual Report called Expenditures on Children by Families each year, and after reviewing this document we began focusing on one specific area that sounded very interesting, which was Expenditures on children 1960 versus 2011.

The statistics have been broken down into budgetary components, we have also taken inflation into account by providing the 1960 amounts in 2011 dollars.

Under each budgetary component we have listed a possible expense that a family would incur and compared the cost between 1960 (with inflation) and 2011.

This infographic makes use of very clear data visualization and lots of white space to make the information easily accessible. I like how the pie charts are self-referential: each new “slice” starts where the last “slice” left off, so the viewer can see how much of the total cost of raising a child has already been accounted for by the previously listed costs.

It’s interesting to see all the costs adjusted for inflation — The Game of Life cost more than double what it does today, and Barbie nearly four times more! Since it’s common to reminisce about how cheap things were “back in the good old days,” it’s funny to see that in reality, some things were proportionally much more expensive. Not so for key items like gas, shoes, education, and mortgages, though…

In all I’d give this infographic an A! Although it sticks to traditional pie charts and bar graphs, they’re used to good effect, and the illustrations, data, and overall design style are all quite unique.

This infographic was submitted to us by Slavens & Associates Real Estate Inc. They provided this description:

If you live in the heart of Toronto, you’d know the real estate market is selling like hotcakes. Having the right numbers and figures will help you make the right purchasing or selling decision. Slavens & Associates Real Estate Inc. brings you a visual report about the hottest property figures in 2012. Don’t miss out on that dream real estate listing!

This is a good report for anyone owning or looking to own a home in Toronto. It’s quick to breeze through and offers insight as to what styles of home have become more and less affordable. I’m glad to see that it is focused on numbers and avoids heavy blocks of text. However, the data viz seems a little random.

I’m not sure how the days are being represented in the average number of days on the market. And for the Average Sale Price to List Price Ratio graph, the distance between 99% and 101% is larger than that between 101% and 105%! For the July 2012 Home Price Index Increase, the circles ideally would be sized according to their percent increase, but instead they are all the same size. The bottom stat looks like it is a start to a bar graph, but the 52% isn’t really shown.

So on the plusses, we have a clear theme, clear and concise information, and data used. However, the data viz isn’t serving its purpose, and the design itself isn’t particularly engaging. Overall I’d give it a C+ — definitely a step in the right direction, but not quite displaying the intended characteristics of an infographic.

This is a good example of a “short and sweet” infographic that tells its story quickly and clearly.

I love the lead-in with the arrows and globe, followed by a clear assortment of data viz to effectively tell the story without many words. This information lets people know that their EB-5 applications are more likely than ever to be denied, and that 2012 is on a fast track to become the busiest year for EB-5s in sheer volume of applicants.

While the design itself is relatively plain, I think it’s appropriate for the topic. I do wonder why the data viz isn’t featured more prominently, though. The dominant images are the globe and the hand with the Visa. I’d like to see the graphs in a larger format to place emphasis on the information instead of the icons.

A little more data overall wouldn’t hurt, either. What % of applicants are male or female? What’s the average age of applicants? Are there peak months for applications? The goal isn’t a long scrolling piece but a bigger picture — a more comprehensive story.

Infographics are intended to tell a story, but this one is more an explanation of the company and a few choice stats inserted. A little more info could help round this out into something great.

Overall I’d give this infographic a B. Great simple design and low on text, but could be filled out a little, and more consideration given to the proportions of the respective elements.

This infographic was submitted to us by Wise Bread.

This infographic takes advantage of all sorts of spooky themes to break up the sections and make the text more exciting to read. I love the pumpkin pie chart. Oh, pumpkin pie! That’s cute… (For you organic food lovers, organic autumn and winter squash are coming into season for delicious holiday treats or pesticide-free jack o’lanterns!) Also, all the iconography and illustrations are great. The extreme use of color could be gaudy in many infographics, but I think because it’s for Halloween, it doesn’t bother me!

I do wish that data visualization was used to its fullest here. The pumpkin chart, as I said, is adorable. It definitely held my attention to read through the data. But the cauldron pie charts are a little less exciting (the pumpkin chart itself was shaped like a pumpkin, whereas these are simple circles) and the sections “American Participation and National Spending,” “How [M]any Americans Participate in the Whole Halloween Experience?” and “Halloween Spending for 2012″ don’t use any data viz. Infographics rely on data viz for visual interest and less emphasis on reading to get the information, so use as much as the design allows and make it creative — depending on your audience.

There are also a few organizational things to consider. The “How [M]any Americans” section could organize the activities by the frequency they’re practiced. Further, “Halloween Spending for 2012″ shows two figures that are average expenditure per person and one figure that is total spend for the whole country, though both costume and pet costume spending are labeled as “Total spend.”

Lastly, there are some capitalization inconsistencies throughout.

All that said, I still love the creative over-the-top design, and there is some great information here. It could just use some proofreading and some more thought to data viz and consistency to make it great. I’d give this infographic a B- overall.

This infographic was submitted to us by AccessRx

There is some interesting information in this graphic, coupled with entertaining copy — although at times it doesn’t make much sense. I’m guessing mercury, antifreeze, and paint thinner aren’t in regular Tamiflu, so how could they be “the active ingredients” at all?

I’m also not sure how the aesthetic fits in. Bulletin boards, paper clips, sticky notes… seems to harken to school or an office rather than prescriptions. Maybe an Rx pad, pharmacy counter or doctor’s office would be more appropriate.

What would really spice this graphic up the most is to take the numbers listed throughout and turn them into visualizations. Counterfeit medicines kill over 700,000 people worldwide each year? Create an icon to represent 10,000 people and put 70 of them. (Putting just 7 icons each representing 100,000 people might not really drive home just how many that is. A larger number of icons will work better.) That’s the same as the population of El Paso? Maybe Put a map of Texas and a ring around El Paso to show where it is and what physical portion of Texas it is. Create a bar graph to show that while the $700,000 LAX bust was significant, the $11.5 million Viagra ring bust was over 16x greater!

Data visualization is a critical element to any infographic. Illustrations also usually look more fluid than do several unrelated stock photos, so we encourage their use where applicable.

As an infographic I have to give this a D since there is no data viz. However, the information is interesting, so it has potential! Maybe add more numbers to increase the amount of data viz. How many people worldwide take each of these drugs? Any estimate on what % of each drug is counterfeit? What about the % of all drugs? More related numbers!
