Managing Heroin Addiction

There is a real battle with opioid use all around the country, but that’s not for lack of addicts trying to get free. If you or someone you know has been battling heroin addiction, you understand the war an addict wages daily. Getting help with detox and rehab is an essential step.

Detox generally starts with medical intervention using Suboxone, Naloxone and Naltrexone, which can be lifesaving in cases of overdose and emergency treatment. The next few weeks are spent enduring withdrawal symptoms, which usually go through three phases.

Psychological symptoms often remain for some time following detox. This is where psychological, behavioral and emotional support become essential. Enrolling in rehab can provide help through cognitive and behavioral therapy, family therapy, 12-step programs, relapse prevention, and fitness and nutrition. Learn more about the details of detox, withdrawals and rehab from the infographic below.

Final Grade

This infographic discusses detoxification from heroin and opioid addiction. It shows the chemical makeup of medications that aid in the detox process, describes what an addict will experience in withdrawals, the steps to take in rehab, and how opioid use can impact your body long-term. There are some instances of effective visual communication, such as the icons in the Rehab section or the body diagram in Long-Term Side Effects — however, looking at the design as a whole, it's visually tough to identify heroin/opiates as the subject. The viewer has to read to understand what the theme/topic is. The "Withdrawal Symptoms" section could also do more to visualize the impacts. In all we'd give this a C.
