This infographic comes from the people over at MovingAuthorities.com. The message here is rather straightforward: even in a down market, it still makes sense to invest in a house. While the point is made with adequate data visualization, some of the graphs feel a bit crowded and confusing, which takes away from the overall message. That being said, the infographic uses a clean color palette and good data visualization to effectively tell a story.

First off, the color scheme works well with the data being conveyed. It’s not too harsh on the eyes, and helps draw attention to the images and makes the graphics pop off the page. It’s clean and simple, which helps tremendously. The third graph in the infographic, comparing a decade’s worth of unstable stock prices compared to relatively predictable real estate prices, really helps drive home the safety and value of home investment even in a hostile market and doesn’t require a ton of text to explain its significance.

The first two graphs, however, seem a bit half-baked. By including the amount by which homeowner’s net worth is greater than renters (x31 in 1998, x36 in 2001, etc.) adds a bit too much to the graph and could distract the reader and negate the graph’s impact. The visual data in itself is impacting enough to be left as is. A much larger stack of gold coins for homeowners vs a much smaller stack for renters. The second graph showing tax savings also requires too much reading and analyzing.

Apart from the first two graphs, the infographic as a whole does a great job with avoiding being too text heavy. Statistics and graphs are generally well explained and serve their purpose in telling a clear story.

This infographic submission comes from the ladies and gentlemen over at Consumer Car Reviews. More and more hybrids are scooting around town, and this infographic is designed to show just how effective these cars are in saving money and the environment. The color scheme is simple, clean and conducive to it’s “green” message. The graphs, charts and images used to show relevant savings are effective, and require/use little to no text to explain.

The first three images look great. Using the LA to Sydney image to convey just how much Americans drive, in terms of actual distance, is impressive and effective and a great lead. Again, the next two graphs are effective in explaining how much gasoline Americans use, particularly the swimming pool comparison. These types of graphics help put hard data into perspective and give readers a real-life reference point for the data. They also do not require much textual explanation, which is the whole point of an infographic.

Unfortunately, the last half of this infographic seems to lose some steam. Providing the statistic that it would take almost 8 years to break even on the purchase price of a hybrid actually takes away from the pro-hybrid discussion and hurts the message overall. There’s likely a better way to show this information, perhaps using Colorado’s tax rebate program for hybrid purchases as an example in a bar graph. For example, showing the cost of initially purchasing a hybrid (factoring in the tax rebate) and the gas savings over a set period of time when compared to the total cost (purchase price and cost of gas over the same period of time) of a regular non-hybrid vehicle.

The gasoline cans portraying the potential national gas savings also lose some of their potential. Again, huge numbers like 74 billion gallons are more effective when put into a real-life comparison, such as a giant tank filled with gas with the Statue of Liberty or similar landmark next to it for size and volume reference.

Overall, this infographic does a nice job with getting the information and the story across to its readers. I’d give this infographic a B, as it is mostly data driven and clean but some of the data visualization falls short of its potential impact.

This infographic is from the folks of FriendsEat.com. Everyone loves bacon, and this infographic dishes out 25 facts regarding the beloved breakfast meat. This one is pretty decent- clean, tri-color pallette that utilizes the colors of the American flag, substantial factual information, and a humorous story to tell. This infographic is, however, considerably text heavy and would leave the viewer confused and disinterested if the text were to removed.

The first few images are great. Especially the aircraft carrier graphic, which uses a real-life comparison to show just how much people really love to eat bacon. But from there on out, the infographic seems to lack solid data visualization. It feels a bit forced and crowded. An example: with the statistic stating that one pig supplies over 23 pounds of bacon. A great way to have shown this fact is perhaps with a scale, with a pig on one side and a graphic visualization of 23 pounds of back on the other. Instead, the graphic as it is just looks like a pig and big long piece of bacon, with no further quantification. That theme seems to continue throughout the Bacon infographic, as many of the graphics are left hanging or are relying to heavily on text.

To be more effective, this infographic could utilize pie charts and bar graphs to help truly visualize the data. Despite its shortcomings, this infographic does utilize a clean color pallette and keeps the dimensions within reasonable limits. Apart from the aircraft carrier visual, there’s no real kicker, nothing that really makes you say “Wow!” I’d give this infographic a C overall.

This infographic comes courtesy of the folks over at Dicks’ Cottons. It’s an overlook on the history of sunglasses, something we all use and likely don’t realize the past they have. An interesting idea for an infographic, so let’s take a look at how this worked out.

I like the amount of interesting information that’s been placed in front of the viewer here. It’s a lot of things that people wouldn’t likely know or research, but interesting facts nonetheless. I also like the humor used throughout the Data component of the infographic, such as “Outcomes of Wearing Sunglasses at Night” and “Price VS Loss”. It’s amusing, and helps to bring some lightheartedness to the viewer.

The colors are a bit all over the place, and overall I’d say the infographic is too text heavy. If I didn’t have the text there, I’d have no idea what was being portrayed for a lot of the visuals. Data visualization is a big part of a successful infographic, and this one doesn’t quite hit the mark. For example, the section with “Other names for Sunglasses” contains no visual at all, it’s all text. The different colored lenses makes sense, but apart from the images of the lenses it’s all text-dependent. I also think that the bottom piece of the infographic, with different styles of sunglasses, looks a little “busy”. It’s fun to look at and figure out, but it kind of gives the impression that it was placed there to take up as much space as possible.

Overall, a good infographic with some great humor and information. However, working on the data visualization and keeping the number of colors down would be helpful. I’d give this Infographic a C+.

This infographic comes courtesy of Divine. It covers the history of programming online, and how the programming world has evolved from three angles: graphics, coding and development. This is all very interesting information, and is very visual in its presentation. I like the colors used, keeping them relatively uniform and toned down makes it easier on the eyes and more likely to hold the users attention. The chronological layout is also helpful in keeping track of the development of programming and gives a good representation of how quickly things change in that world.

One of the issues with visualizing technical information is that it’s easy to lose a not-so-techy viewer in the amount of information you’re visualizing. I think this infographic drops some points here, because unless you’re familiar with what CS5 is or WYSISYG editors, you would never know unless you were to refer to the small, hard to read text that somehow lines up with each tile.

The information is there, but the text is tiny and without that text most people would be left hanging. If they were given visual examples of a site utilizing Flash player or what WYSIWYG editors do or look like, it’d be more of an impacting infographic.

Overall, the colors are clean and the design is good. Making it less techy and a bit more visualized would be helpful for the common viewer who doesn’t know what these programs or codes are, but is still interested in the information. I’d give this a B for a good design, but a little short on visualization.

This is infographic comes courtesy of IdentyMe. The way this infographic is laid out is great. It’s simple, to the point, and almost entirely visual. Very little text dependency and great data visualization. A clean color scheme makes it even more visually appealing. While the visualization is great, it’s not complete, and there are some components that are a bit too text heavy to make it an A.

The Google Plus insanity is a great topic for an infographic. The gender breakdown is great, and I like how throughout the infographic the population percentages were also represented with proportionately sized visuals, such as the bubbles in the gender visual and the population by country. It helps to show the US dominance in Google Plus users without relying on text to convey the facts.

The cost to create and maintain Google Plus would likely be better show with some sort of visual graph, chart, etc. The piggy bank is great, but the numbers underneath require a bit too much reading for a successful portrayal. Using a graph or chart to show the amount invested in each company/acquisition/employee would drive the cost home a bit more than it currently does.

That being said, this infographic does a great job with visualizing data and keeping on topic. Most of the data and presentation is well thought out, easy to understand and comprehend. The color scheme is consistent and non-abrasive. It could use some work on the cost of Google Plus section, but apart from that this infographic is a job well done. I’d give it a A-.

This infographic comes from the folks over at Kelly Outsourcing and Consulting Group. It’s a very well done infographic, with some great design work. I really appreciate the central graphic, displaying the overwhelming more significant value of work experience when compared to education. It’s clean, easy to look at and relatively self-explanatory. The color palette chosen here is uniform and easy on the eyes, while also allowing the graphics to “pop”.

There’s also a lot of text on here. While I don’t feel that it’s an overwhelming amount of text or that it drowns out the graphics, there’s almost always a way to visually portray that data with less text. The graphic explaining the main reasons why people change career paths is a bit drowned in text. Visual portrayals of more money, better balance and new interests are easy to come by and make for a better infographic. Another example: the graphic on the bottom left side showing employee’s confidence in returning to work after leave. It takes too much reading to get that message across, and by the time you’ve read the explanation you’ve almost lost interest in what the graphic was displaying in the first place. Maybe using less text, and relying more on data visualization for those two graphics would be a good idea.

That being said, this infographic does a great job overall with showing the importance of work experience and career paths. The central graphic is awesome, and that’s where people’s eyes will most likely fall and draw interest. I’d give this infographic an B+.

>

This infographic submission comes courtesy of TravelMatch. The goal here is to show some of the huge (and somewhat gross) numbers behind the travel industry. There’s a ton of information here, but the designer does a good job with organizing the information and using data visualization to make the infographic friendlier on the eyes and easier to understand. That being said, some of the graphics are not easily explained when left to stand on their own, and depend somewhat heavily on the accompanying text to support them.

The graphic featuring the armada of planes holds some useful information, but is drowned out by the overuse of the text. The number of empty seats on airplanes every year is incredibly interesting, as it’s lost business for airlines. This graphic does a poor job in really conveying that data visually, and instead relies on the write-up to explain the information. Somehow incorporating an overhead jet layout showing the number of empty seats would be simple, clean and easy to understand without too much supporting text.

As gross as it may be, the image describing the amount of pee in public pools is a great example of how data should be visualized in an infographic. The picture should describe the data, with limited text required. This image does a great job accomplishing that goal, well done. Another great example are the last two images. Travelers use enough sunscreen to cover Luxembourg, and enough soap to balance out 65,000 elephants. That is exactly what is portrayed here, and it could be done without any supporting text. Again, a great job.

Overall, I’d give this infographic somewhere in between a B+ and an A. The overuse of text is noticeable but not to glaring, and is bearable. One way to improve there would be to use more graphics that incorporate some sort of chart or graph into the image. There are some great examples of how an infographic should be pieced together, and some very interesting statistics and facts put together to create a good story.
