Today’s infographic comes from BeingSelfEmployed.org and compares what it’s like to be self employed in the US vs. UK. All in all, this infographic is OK at best. It is an infographic, but relies a lot on typography to tell the story and has a really rough color pallet. There is SOME data visualization, but this is mainly a lot of images paired with large text to keep driving the same points home. Also, all infographics should be checked for grammar and spelling before publishing them to the public. For instance, the word moons is being used as a possessive noun, so why isn’t it moon‘s?? If text is going to be that big on an infographic, it should be easy to edit before pushing live.

Upon submitting this infographic, the folks at BeingSelfEmployed.org had the following to say:

The US has a reputation for being entrepreneurial compared to the rest of the world.

This infographic compares being self employed in the UK vs the US, highlighting the difference in average incomes, tax rates and percentages.

Today’s infographic comes to us from DiscountCoder.com. The infographic delves into the very brief history of the iPad and an introduction to the iPad2. The iPad2 is not yet available in the UK, so it makes sense that a UK site would create an infographic that showcases an introduction to the latest addition to the iPad family. The other great thing about this infographic is that it’s using UK specific data in all the charts and graphs, so it does a good job of speaking to that UK audience.

All in all, this is a very traditional infographic with a clean “Swiss” style design. I would like to see a little less dead space throughout the design, larger text, and maybe some more eye candy. That said, not all clients or designers want that, so to each their own.

Today’s infographic comes to us from AffordableTungstenRings.com. It explains the difference between hiring a wedding planner or doing it all yourself. Upon submitting this infographic, the folks at ATR had the following to say:

Wedding planners can be quite expensive and often times very difficult to work with. Many brides choose to forgo a wedding planner and decide that with the help of family and friends they can plan their own wedding, but is it truly worth it?

All in all, this is an OK first start to an infographic, but not much of one. The design is sub par at best, with too many elements that look like buttons on an online store. While the “total cost” section has data visualization due to color coding, this information would be much easier to take in as a bar chart. There is opportunity for so much more with this infographic, but instead it just shows a list of numbers and doesn’t even include sources at the bottom, so how do I know these numbers are reputable?

Today’s infographic comes to us from eCampus. They provided a very long description during their submission, so I’ll dive into my critique first. Their infographics are improving, but I feel like there is still room for improvement. This design feels like a lot of clip art slapped together. There isn’t any data visualization, instead there are images that compliment the text, but if the text were taken out, the images would not make any sense… so it’s not really an infographic. As I’ve said many times with their infographics, their logo is way too huge at the bottom. It deters from the entire infographic and makes this infographic look too self serving. Infographics should provide information for a wide audience and that audience should feel top of mind, but the size of the logo at the bottom makes it seem like the audience doesn’t matter.

There’s so much data out there about the class of 2011 that could have been included in this infographic like the expected graduation rate, the number of 17-18 year olds using Facebook and other social networks, and more. I really wish that were included because right now this infographic is sub par at best.

Here’s what was said upon submission:

Online textbook e-tailer eCampus.com recently compiled research from Beloit College’s Mindset List into a detailed infographic explaining the constantly changing culture that today’s college students are immersed in.

According to the infographic posted on the eCampus Blog and at http://images.ecampus.com/images/new-ecampus/mindset-list.jpg, students in the Class of 2011 have never seen Johnny Carson alive on television. During the course of their lives, students have always had access to the World Wide Web as well as bottled water. It is the norm for students today to see commercial product placement in films and on television.

Every year, Beloit College publishes the Mindset List allowing teachers to know what current culture is for their students. This allows teachers to know that U2 is much more than a spy plane to their students. “In a constantly changing culture eCampus.com is glad that we are able to keep our customers informed and current on important topics.” said Matt Montgomery, President and CEO of eCampus.com. “At eCampus.com we strive to provide good useful information to our customers to keep them learning even beyond the textbook.”

The infographic also details the real time autobiographies created by the Class of 2011 through social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace. According to the infographic, Fox has always been considered a major network during the lives of these students. Also it is normal for today’s students that Humvees, minus the artillery, are available to the public.

Whenever I put “Infographic” in quotes in the title of a post, it means that this was submitted as an infographic, but not really an infographic at all. We’ve all made this mistake when first doing infographics. People think that all they have to do is add some nice pictures next to a bunch of content and it’s an infographic, but it’s not even close. An infographic is a graphic representation of information. It relies on graphics to visualize important data. This “infographic” relies on text to get all of the important data across and then uses images to compliment the text. If all the images were taken out, the same information would be there. If all the text were taken out, the “infographic” wouldn’t make any sense. Therefor, this is not an infographic because the images are not showcasing the information. A few nice additions to this design would have made it a mediocre infographic, but at least it would have been an infographic. Those additions include 2 simple bar graphs. One that compares fiber across all the meals and one that compares protein across all the meals. Each food could also have a pie chart showing the fiber vs. protein content ratios, which would break up the text and take things up a notch for this design.

Upon submitting this “infographic,” the folks at Better Health Innovations had the following to say:

This infographic is entitled “Gross Food That You Will Want To Eat!” is simply about food that may be gross, but with high levels of protein and fiber, they are nutritionally awesome for your mind, body, and soul. It goes on to show foods like oatmeal and spinach are more accepted, thus at the top of the list, compared to brains and blood sausage at the bottom of the chart. For easy reading, the protein content is listed in green and the fiber content is listed in orange. Some items might not have high levels of protein or fiber but are still very nutritional for you, therefore all advantages to eat a particular food is listed under the name, protein, and fiber content.

Appature Inc, a Seattle-based software company that makes marketing tools for the healthcare industry, just launched its first infographic about Prescriptions Most Marketed to Doctors in the healthcare industry! Our infographic breaks down the ins and outs of which prescriptions are most marketed to doctors, to which prescriptions have the greatest sales ($5.3 Billion!) and even patient sentiments regarding a doctor’s prescribing habits. By reading this infographic, we hope that readers will get a little peek inside the intricate inner-workings of the infamous pharmaceutical industry! As TIME magazine highlights, “…the pharmaceutical industry is – and has been for years – the most profitable of all businesses in the U .S.”

This infographic was submitted by Imogo.com, which is a company that utilizes cloud technology to provide mobile office services. When submitting this infographic, the folks at Imogo had the following to say:

As the “You’re Already Cloud Computing” infographic illustrates through the popular usage of a variety of different SaaS providers, millions of internet users are already harnessing the power of cloud computing.
</blockqote>
All in all, this is yet another submission that doesn’t follow the guidelines of an actual infographic. An infographic NEEDS to visualize data through design. This just uses typography to make the design look good, but no data is actually visualized. One very simple way to visualize the data would be to have larger font size for larger numbers, but they don’t even do this. I would prefer some graphs and charts that showcase this information, but right now this entire design relies on text to showcase the data. If all the text were taken out, the infographic would just have a bunch of logos. An infographic needs to follow one important rule: if you can take all of the images out and still get the same information, then the images are not telling the story so it’s not an infographic. Right now, the images are complimenting a lot of text, but the text should compliment images in infographics.

This infographic comes to us from InvestInTech.com and showcases how Adobe is becoming the newest target for Hackers. Upon submitting this infographic, the folks at Adobe had the following to say:

This infographic focuses on the recent increase of online exploits targeting Adobe. Hackers vs. Adobe infographic shows how attacks on Adobe products and platforms, particularly Acrobat and Flash, have skyrocketed over the last several years, with attacks on Adobe heavily outweighing attacks on Microsoft Office-related products, which used to be the most popular target of these online hackers.

The infographic also gives insights into how cyber criminals use PDF files and Flash applications to infiltrate your computer – showing us what to look out for and be aware of in order to prevent and avoid virus infiltration via these popular programs, file formats and platforms.

Overall, I really like this infographic. It’s got a great clean design that takes on the Adobe brand. It is a bit wordy, which is somewhat hard to get through, but there are also some nice data points shown through creative imagery. My only issue with it is size – one has to scroll both left to right and up and down to view the entire infographic. Had they kept it at 1000px wide, it would be far easier to review.

Today’s infographic is about BAFTA, which is the UK equivalent of the Oscars. Since we began the week with an Oscar infographic, it’s only right that we close the week with a BAFTA infographic. Unfortunately though, I’m not too impressed with this infographic. I just went on a long rant yesterday about how infographics must be graphical representations of information. In other words, the data needs to be visualized. Here’s a simple rule of thumb that is a MUST when designing infographics: If all the text can be taken out of the infographic and the images left over do not display any information or tell a story, then it’s not an infographic. Instead, it’s a well designed article with nice pictures complimenting it. This infographic has fun typography, but (besides the tag cloud at the bottom), this infographic doesn’t use it to display information and there are no images displaying information either. I wish the designer would have included some charts and graphs to showcase data. For instance, why not a graph comparing winners (and number of BAFTAs) side by side? Why not a graph showing BAFTA predictions for the year? There’s got to be data out there where someone has polled an audience to get their predictions.

My other issue with this infographic is that the images are not cut out well at all. Add a mask to blur out the hard edges. There is still a piece of white background in Kristen Stewart’s hair. If you’re going to cut off someone’s waist or legs, then put a border around them (for instance, put them in a polaroid) so that it doesn’t look awkward.

Finally, if the entire infographic is going to focus on text, pass it through editorial before pushing it live. For instance, what does this sentence mean: “The first BAFTA was award on April 16, 1947″

I hate to be so harsh, but I’ve seen other infographics from this designer that are really great, so I’m wondering what went wrong with this one. I know this designer can do better, but there might be reasons for this infographic turning out as it did.

This infographic comes to us from elocalwebsites.com, a company that focuses on designing directories for local businesses including roofers, plumbers, lawyers, and more. Upon submitting this infographic, the folks at eLocal said the following:

If you’d think 50 experts would have a lot to say on home improvement trends in 2011, well, then you’d be right! We had such a great response to the 2nd eLocal.com Blog-Off that we ended up with volumes of information and insight.

After a little bit of magic, we packaged everything you need to know into the below infographic, giving you your complete guide to 2011 home improvement trends. Let the inspiration begin!

All in all, the design of this infographic is nice and clean, and it’s definitely fun to look at. My issue with it is the same that keeps popping up as more and more companies create their first infographic: there’s no data being visualized. An infographic is a graphic representation of information. It should include charts and graphs as well as text, but shouldn’t rely on text only to get the information across. Right now, if all of the text were taken out of this infographic, not a single piece of information or data would be provided to the viewer. That means that this is not using graphics to display the information, instead the graphics are merely complimenting the information. While these graphics do a great job of complimenting the information, it’s basically a well designed article. To improve things and make this more like an infographic, the folks at eLocalWebsites.com could have included graphs showing the money spent in each home improvement trend. They could show popularity by getting keyword traffic data from Google. They could also show how these trends are improving the value of homes by diving into the profit gained per home improvement. Unfortunately, none of this is happening, which makes this infographic hard to take in. Infographics should require as little reading as possible, and this only requires reading.
