We are closing out the week with a nice infographic from KissMetrics.com. The infographic shows what webmasters can do to survive website downtime (which is pretty timely after the big Dreamhost downtime event a few weeks ago). Upon submitting this infographic, the folks at Kiss Metrics had the following to say:

Let’s be honest. Website downtime can infuriate us. And according to some, downtime can do much worse. It can affect user confidence, loyalty and ultimately eat into your bottom line. How can we dodge the fail whale? While we answer it, we might also engage in a bit of swashbuckling.

All told, the design is pretty good and fits with the Kiss Metrics brand. My issue with this infographic is that it’s very wordy and the text is so small that it’s pretty hard to read through. This is definitely a confusing topic, but I would have liked to see more visualization. For instance, downtime of popular web hosts would have nicely complimented the downtime of popular websites section. Average downtime would have been nice to see as well. Finally, I would have also included most notable downtimes in history. For instance, when Friendster went down, it lost all of its users to Facebook within hours… this truly shows the impact downtime can cause to a business.

Today, we have another infographic submission from eCampus. This isn’t today’s version of an infographic, but it’s a more traditional version. I say this because traditional infographics are often just one graph, but today’s infographics have many charts and graphs to create a very visually stimulating piece. When eCampus submitted this infographic, they had the following to say:

Every college has the good dorm and the bad dorm. Unfortunately, many students are not aware of which is which prior to arriving in college. The “Dormy Awards” from DormSplash.com inspired us at eCampus.com to create this graphic to try and guide our customers into the right living situation.

What I like about this infographic is the very creative way of showcasing a bar graph. I also like that eCampus didn’t make their logo take up a large portion of the infographic, which is something they have done in past infographics. What I don’t like is that this is not a full infographic (in today’s sense of the word). I would love for this to include reasons why these dorms are the best vs. worst, ratings of each dorm, cost to stay in each dorm, location of each dorm (using a map, not listing it out), and more data points that would really help to answer the huge question that I walk away with after looking at this (especially since no sources are listed, so I don’t know if this is a matter of opinion or fact): WHY?

Today’s infographic comes to us from Coast to Coast Mattress and dissects all the different types of mattresses available today. Upon submitting this infographic, the designers had the following to say about it:

Do I like this infographic? Eh…. not really. Here’s what I do like: the mattress pieces for the bar graphs. That’s actually pretty cool. The color pallet is OK, especially since it matches the branding of Coast to Coast. Here’s my issues:

This infographic relies too much on typography rather than true data visualization

The typography is cluttered, making this infographic really hard to take in and it likely makes people want to stop scrolling before even getting half way through

Starting with the comparison chart makes the upper fold of the infographic uninteresting and too text heavy. A way to fix this would be to include a standard price range and showcase this in a bar graph

Reading all caps everywhere… especially with a very small letting (line spacing) throughout the infographic

I’m not going to lie… I don’t view this as an infographic. That said, it was submitted as an infographic, and we try to post the majority of what people submit to us, so I will explain my thoughts. It’s pretty simple really: an infographic should be data visualization. This design has amazing typography, but the data is not actually visualized. There is no easy way to take everything in just by looking at it, because in the end you still have to read this to get all of the information. Now I understand that some infographics will have to rely on a decent amount of text to showcase the information properly, but an infographic should never be all text because then it’s not an infographic. In other words, this isn’t an infographic… it’s more like a nice poster, but the data is not easier to take in than a list would be and none of the data is actually visualized.

Upon submission, the folks at healthwatchcenter.com had the following to say:

Human body is an amazing machine made up of many things like organs, bones, skin, and so forth. If we look at it, it’s not less than any complex system with so many things fitted inside precisely and perfectly.

I like this infographic. How often do I start a post out like that? It’s well designed and does a good job of visualizing the data. It also fits with the topic of the website that produced it, which is hard to find these days. My one and only issue with this infographic is that the font size is super small, so it’s really hard to read, especially on a laptop. This infographic could be an extra 500px in height just to bump up the font size. That said, the color wheel is great, the illustrations are nice, and the way everything is laid out is very easy to take in.

OK, I thought about it while writing this and I have just one more issue: there is too much dead space at the top. Placing the color wheel in the center and the maps above it would solve this problem, because when viewed at full size, the infographic seems too sparse.

When this was submitted by the designer, Leigh Riley, he had the following (very funny) things to say about this infographic:

Design Emperor,
I bow to your visualness!
I have a slick ass kick ass super awesome infographic for your perusal. It’s all about the effects of sunshine and happiness around the world. It was made by über talent Leigh Riley & the team at Arena-Quantum for Fly Thomas Cook.

QUICK OVERVIEW
- Sunshine doesn’t guarantee high quality of life but does bring health, riches and a full night sleep!
- Icelanders may only have an average 3hrs of sunshine per day with their dark winter nights but they live satisfied and long lives!
- South Africa has an average of 10 hours sunshine per day compared to only 6hrs in Canada but Canadians rate their life satisfaction 60% higher.

Today’s infographic comes to us from SingleGrain.com, which is a company that does SEO, PPC, and Social Media Optimization (SMO). Upon submitting this infographic, the folks at Single Grain had the following to say:

This infographic highlights the income and expense of some of the top tech giants in mobile space.

All in all, the infographic is OK. The design isn’t bad, the color scheme is nice, but man is this thing wordy. Wordy infographics are often a deterrent for many. Infographics are a very common method of online marketing these days. Because of that, the space is super cluttered. This means that, to stand out from the crowd, your infographic has to be amazing and definitely not intimidating. This infographic, though, is a bit intimidating with all the text and it is not the kind of eye candy people are getting used to. To improve this infographic, I suggest that they add more data visualization. For instance, a time line of each company with important stock figures would be a great addition. A chart that compares them side by side vertically would help too. Yes, they show this horizontally, but it’s hard to see because of all the scrolling, so a concise bar chart would be an additional perk. Some data about the company owners, with pics of each owner would also be a great addition, as this is something few know and would like to see. Finally, the SingleGrain.com logo should be on this infographic. Since it’s not, what’s to stop someone else from claiming credit for this infographic? Infographics are a tool for link building and brand building, both of those can’t be accomplished without a logo in the design.

Today’s infographic is all about Acne. It comes from Ulmer Dermatology and is proof that almost any concept can be made into an infographic. Upon submission, the folks at UlmerDerm.com had the following to say:

Acne affects millions of Americans. When it comes to acne treatments and acne solutions, there are a number of facts to know about acne and how it affects us. These 14 things you should know about acne will help you to improve and maintain your complexion. Learn the facts of acne treatment and acne prevention.

As far as design goes, this is a well designed image utilizing great typography, but is it data visualization? Not completely. This is mainly a well designed article or list. There are no actual data points in here, no graphs, nothing to compare side by side, no charts, etc. If all the text were taken out of this infographic, it wouldn’t make any sense, which is the first sign that this is not data visualization. An infographic NEEDS to have images showcase the information and the data. It needs to designed in such a way that if the images were taken out, then it wouldn’t make sense with just text, not the other way around. This is the challenge of infographics. As the infographic space continues to become saturated with new companies entering the market, it’s important to set a high bar and work to hit that with every design. This misses that mark, as it’s not really data visualization. It’s designed well, but doesn’t fit the true definition of an infographic. Of course, this isn’t always the designer’s fault. Often times, clients do not fully understand what a true infographic entails and they request a large amount of text.

This infographic just makes me laugh (which is what it’s supposed to do). When VailPropertyBrokerage.com submitted this infographic, they had the following to say:

It’s called “10 reasons single ladies should vacation in Vail, Colorado” but it’s really meant to be a funny commentary on dating and how it relates to skiing and one of America’s wealthiest ski towns. Women often overlook the ski slopes as a good place to meet men. Vail is one of America’s wealthiest ski towns, so it is no coincidence that there would be a large number of single men with college degrees and high paying jobs who ski at Vail. With all the other activities to do at Vail besides skiing, it’s a great place to meet new people, try new things, and have a good time.

I like the art in this infographic and think that the graphs are very funny. I do wish the top weren’t as wordy as it is. It would be nice to add some important data points, graphs, etc. to the top. I say this because the mass amount of text is intimidating and may deter people from reading through. It’d be better if the single guy graph was at the top, then the cartoon segment showing the slopes, then the bottom two graphs. That would break this up better.

This infographic was submitted by XCubeLabs.com and acts as a time line showcasing the evolution of mobile operating systems. Upon submitting this infographic, the folks at XCubeLabs had the following to say:

An infographic which clearly illustrates how the commercial mobile operating systems has grown over time. From the first commercial Palm OS to the latest Android 3.0 Honeycomb the mobile operating system world has gathered many features which makes computing faster and smarter. Palm was the first mobile Operating System to be launched commercially right back in 1996 followed by Windows Pocket PC 2000. The mobile OS technology slowly gained traction from their on but was the market was still away from total maturity until Apple launched the revolutionary iPhone in 2007. Now the mobile market share is split between Symbian, Android and iPhone in huge numbers with windows, palm and blackberry fighting for the fourth spot.

This infographic is OK at best. It’s incredibly hard to read because there is not enough contrast in colors. There’s also not any real data being visualized. Honestly, time line infographics are not easy. They require a clean design and the ability to organize a great deal of information. They are often pretty text heavy, so it’s important to come up with a good amount of data, facts, and figures to break up all the text. This infographic has a lot of dead space in the top half, which could have been fixed with charts and graphs about mobile operating systems. That small addition would greatly improve the infographic.

I’ve come to the conclusion that people interpret “what is an infographic” in many different ways. For me, an infographic in its most basic form is a graphical representation of information or data. An infographic in its most creative form is akin to eye candy. It includes a vast array of data rather than just one piece of information. In other words, infographics of today are moving beyond the simple data visualization of showcasing just one graph and are now using that one graph as just one piece to the overall puzzle. This submission, from MrRight.com.au is, in my opinion, just one piece of what should have been a much larger puzzle. Yes, this is an infographic in its most basic form, but standards have changed and viral infographics are often so much more than just one piece of data.

In my opinion, this topic could have led to a very broad design that included more than just the age range of who men hit on and also showcased hair color, race, height, and more. Right now, I view this as nothing more than a piece to a much larger puzzle. That said, we try to accept and post every submission that comes our way, even when they aren’t always our definition of an infographic, they may be for someone else.

Upon submitting this infographic, the folks at MrRight.com.au had the following to say:

It’s a myth that men always date younger women. Research from online dating service MrRight.com.au shows that guys between 18 and 24 are equally attracted to girls their age and women between 30 and 34. It’s only when men reach their mid-thirties that their interest in younger women picks up. MrRight.com.au, the only Australian dating site inspired by women. Ladies, choose who can contact you. Guys sit back, relax, let women choose you. It’s free to join, search and send messages. Meet single guys and guys online across all Australia capital cities and regions, whether you’re looking for love, fun or friendship.
