This infographic makes great use of illustrations, fun colors, data visualization, and clean organization. The typography in the header is quite engaging, so it definitely makes the viewer want to continue on to the rest of the content.

The text does appear a bit heavy at times, though it makes sense to include for the purpose of storytelling. Otherwise, the IG would need to be more of a comic panel. However, it could be broken up a bit more to avoid paragraph chunks. Even one sentence can be 5, 6, 7 lines long when formatted for an infographic.

The content is engaging and each section is fairly brief, so it’s fairly quick to move through. The engaging and lively design works in tandem with the content to create a great infographic overall!

My chief critique of the infographic is that it lacks sources. A source list allows the viewer to verify information included in the infographic, as well as providing suggestions for resources to check out more information. Sure, a Google search could accomplish this, but the research portion of an infographic can take hours — and in a research paper, one always cites their sources. Consider including footnotes or a unified source list at the bottom of your infographic to increase credibility.

There are also a few cases where the data viz isn’t truly data viz – for example, in the 1950 Great Brinks Robbery, the dollar bill to represent $58,000, if taken to scale, would mean that the total amount of the heist was just $406,000, instead of the $2.7 million. You’d actually need over 46.5 of those dollar bills for it to accurately show just how little was really recovered!

In all I’d rate this infographic an B+ — extremely visually engaging, but could disperse the text just a touch more and focus on accuracy in data visualization for bigger impact.

I do find the hatched sidebar to be a little distracting. I imagine it was added just to create a bit more texture, but it feels a bit out of place to me. I think the simple design can just be owned without needing an extra visual element on the side.

In all I’d give this infographic an A — for a B2B infographic, I think it is accomplishing everything that it needs to.

This infographic utilizes a simple color palette and clean design, offering just a couple of statistics so that the viewer can process the information quickly. The illustrations are cute and add some visual interest beyond just the circle graph. The design is not overwhelming and there are no text chunks, so it isn’t a big project for the viewer — they can gain all the information they need in about 20 seconds.

It would be interesting to see this as a series of infographics, or part of a larger graphic. In its extreme brevity, it almost seems more like a single section of an infographic than a standalone IG.

In all I’d give this infographic an A! It’s quick, concise, contains data viz and is visually engaging. It’s a little “safe” in overall design, but it avoids being boring.

This is a great example of using data visualization, iconography, and illustration to help tell the story. This infographic avoids being text-heavy and uses visual cues to guide the reader through the infographic without getting lost or — maybe worse — bored! The designer uses data visualization in nearly every possible space. The clear section breaks also make it very easy to know that the topic is going to shift gears.

I do think it could use a little livening up (maybe playing the typography a bit more — the first section does a great job of this by highlighting the numbers in orange — and taking a few more risks beyond the typical ribbon/banner used for headings).

I’m also curious about the data viz for the very first stat. If I was to assume that there were 100 people icons on the map (and it looks like there are much more than that) I’d be looking for 7 people in black. But I see 8, and again, far more than 100 people, so I’m not sure that data viz was accurately used here.

Lastly, I’d love to see an introductory sentence or two, or at the very least a subheading for the first section. It goes straight from the title of the infographic into the first set of stats without a transition, which is a little jarring. It’s fine to do this as well in the infographic’s blog post, but for the image to stand alone when shared on other pages (such as this one!), it’s a good idea to include a brief introduction and conclusion on the infographic itself.

In all I’d give this infographic a B — clear and concise, but a little “safe” and needs a bit of context.

There’s a lot of interesting texture, background, illustration and photography in this graphic. Each section brings a different aesthetic, which keeps the viewer interested — if slightly disoriented. There are plenty of great stats for anyone interested in the business, but it doesn’t drag on for too long.

The graphic makes pretty good use of iconography throughout, but it does become a little text-heavy in places. One contributing factor to this is that none of the numbers are visualized.

The second section does a good job of breaking this up with the “50 Jackpots dropped every day” and “1 Jackpot every 28 minutes” callouts, and the VIP section also does a good job — but the extended $31M stat above the VIP section and the paragraph-style list of events below are a little lengthy compared to those. For the $31M stat, I’d suggest going back to iconography: remove the text description “Among the prizes: trips around the world…” and utilize icons for the prizes instead. For the events list, maybe feature logos/banners for the events instead.

Organization could also use a quick look — in the “Over 600,000 new players…” section, only the top (largest) stat has to do with new players. Perhaps the “600,000 new players” stat could be moved to the final section, since the social media outreach could be linked to some of those new players?

In all I’d give this infographic a C. Good information for a target audience, not trying to do too much, and far from bland in design. However, I’d love to see the numbers shown a little more creatively, and maybe a bit more of a cohesive design so it is not as jarring to switch between sections. I’d revisit the use of neon green in the color palette — it’s the only color that doesn’t quite seem to fit.

I love the concept of learning to understand what the heck your teenager is saying! The illustrations are cute and the definitions are quite helpful (some, like YOLO and swag, are internationally applicable).

The topic, however, doesn’t lend itself that well to an infographic in the traditional sense. Because it’s relying on text definitions, there’s more reading required than viewing. Limiting to one definition with an accompanying illustration would cut down significantly on text.

It could be fun to include some fake statistics to go along with the information (“95% of teens use this word daily,” for example), so as to further dilute the concentration of text. The more that a viewer has to read, the less likely they’ll stay engaged. Even though each section has perhaps only 30 words, the size and layout of the text make it look as long as a paragraph — rethinking the proportions of the text, then, could be another contributing factor to making this infographic a little more approachable.

In all, I’d have to rate this a C as an infographic — while there are lots of icons and illustrations, there’s a lot of text weighing it all down, and few real “facts” (though the origin story of “dench” is fascinating). As a guide for helping parents decode their children, though — A!

This is a nice quick guide offering tips to help make your teeth healthier right away! We can offer a few tips of our own on how to make this a better infographic, rather than just a guide.

To start, it would be excellent to have illustrations/icons accompanying each of the 8 tips, rather than every other tip. Text in an infographic should be aided by illustrations or data visualization whenever possible. There are ways to enhance the illustrations as well so that they help to tell the story on their own.

The first illustration is the only one that doesn’t really work toward the story. The image of the girl brushing her teeth (while cute!) doesn’t convey any info about soft bristles or toothbrush handle shape. The second image does let you know that there will be info about electric toothbrushes — but it could also help explain the point of Tip 3, that electric brushes don’t necessarily clean better than manual ones. Maybe an electric toothbrush and a manual toothbrush could be on a pedestal, like at a sporting event, but they’re both on the same spot and have the same medal? Just an idea for a visual metaphor to help show that they are equal!

The same goes for the floss. An illustration of how to use floss as described in Tip 7 would be more effective here.

It would be great to see some data interwoven here, too. What percent of people prefer hard-bristled brushes? How many times a week does the average person floss? Even without data, a few facts always help ground an infographic, and data helps add a little intrigue and relatability (such as “I floss way more/way less than the average person!”).

In all I’d give this infographic a C — the illustrations should be working a bit harder for the storyline, and I’d love to see some facts and/or stats scattered throughout. (Plus it could use a little proofing. Tip 4 is actually labelled as “2,” and there’s inconsistency in the use of periods throughout.)

This infographic was submitted to us by SpareFoot. They also provided this brief description:

SpareFoot, the largest online marketplace for self-storage, presents some figures that shed some light on what the future holds for the Class of 2013. Taken from a number of different sources, this infographic should give recent graduates a good preview of what they can expect out there in the real world.

There’s a lot of great information here, and it’s conveyed without an excess of text. This makes it really fast and simple to move through the infographic. It’s essentially exactly what the title says: a snapshot of the current graduating class! It’s especially interesting to see what students prefer in a job initially and again once they’re seriously considering a job — and that “friendly co-workers” makes the list both times!

In addition to keeping the text trim, the design utilizes data visualization — perhaps not at every opportunity, but it is there to help convey some of the information. The organization is clean, with subheadings and color changes to cue when new sections begin.

I would like to see the text lists portrayed with a bit more interest in some cases. Under “Corporate Culture,” in the aforementioned section about job considerations when initially and seriously considering a job, I like the use of iconography to break up the text a bit. But once we get down to “Top 5 Workplace Benefits…” and especially “Top Personal Qualities…” the lists are just blocks of text. I call out the “Top Personal Qualities” list particularly since every line begins with “Ability to,” making it a bit monotonous even though it’s only 5 short lines of text. Same goes for the entire “Work It” section.

In all, though, this infographic does what it set out to do, so I’d give it a B for conveying the necessary information in a clear and concise manner.

This graphic makes a lot of good points about its topic and features some cute illustrations. However, the illustrations aren’t driving the graphic: the text is. Since the viewer has to read their way through, it doesn’t really do the job that an infographic is meant to do. An infographic should tell a story with imagery wherever possible, keeping text to a minimum. This maximizes engagement in our visual world.

Unfortunately, this feels a bit like an article that was overlaid onto some background imagery, rather than an infographic. As mentioned, it needs to rely more heavily on illustration, data visualization, iconography — anything other than text blocks to tell its story. The text should play a more supplemental role.

There are also inconsistencies and typos. The word “e-commerce” is spelled several different ways throughout the IG, alternating capitalizations and occasionally featuring a hyphen. That’s a unique situation since everyone seems to have their own way to spell it, but it should be consistent within the image. Proofreading is a pretty important step to any final product, so be sure to triple-check your work.

Given this, it’s tough to grade this as an infographic. I’d have to give it a D for being almost exclusively text, unfortunately.

This has several elements commonly seen in infographics: timelines, a “by the numbers” section, profiles of key players in the subject, and assorted fun facts. There are lots of great numbers throughout the IG (£6 prize?! Old school!) so you learn a lot about the game in a short amount of time.

Because there are so many numbers here, I’d love to see some data visualization incorporated! £6? How about 6 £1 notes? 12 finals won by Scottish players? 12 Scottish flags! That takes some of the reading out of the infographic, and makes it even quicker and more intuitive for the viewer. This infographic does feature a fair amount of text (the timeline being the most crowded example), so any opportunities to cut down on text should be integrated into a great infographic.

Still, the overall aesthetic remains playful, colorful, and lively, so it’s fun to move from section to section. The design also manages to incorporate illustration elements with photos, and it isn’t too jarring — sometimes this combination can be awkward.

In all I would give this infographic a B-. It contains a lot of good data, but could rely less on text to convey its info — telling stories with images is one of the key functions of a great infographic.
