Naps can be a great boost for those feeling sleepy mid-day! Just 20-30 minutes can wake you up and boost productivity. It can even lower your risk of heart disease (afternoon napping 3x weekly!) and save employers $18 billion per year in lost productivity costs.

Your midday drowsiness is caused by the hypothalamus, which runs your body clock.

Think napping is for wusses? LBJ and JFK were both avid nappers! And FYI, the best time to nap is between 1:00 and 3:00.

A 20 minute nap can wake you up and improve motor skills. Half an hour to an hour improves memory, creativity and decision-making. Over an hour, however, and you enter REM sleep, which increases the chances of feeling groggy upon waking.

In the perfect half-hour nap, your senses are still active during the first five minutes. Between five and 25 minutes, you fall into deeper sleep, bolstering your immune system and stockpiling cortisol to make you alert when you wake. In the last five minutes, very tired nappers could enter REM sleep — in this case, a nap might not be very beneficial, even on your favorite mattress (http://www.tempurpedic.ca/Mattresses/Mattresses.asp).

To get the most out of your naps, nap regularly, keep the room dark or wear an eye mask, stay warm, and sleep for just 30 minutes.

Some skin problems may be aggravated by the food we eat! Get a look at what could be causing problems.

The blood sugar spike from sugary snacks boost insulin production — higher insulin levels may increase acne, though it’s debated. Sugar could damage collagen and
elastin, which keep your skin tight. Try whole grains instead of white bread, and fruit instead of processed sugars.

Dehydrating ingredients like alcohol, caffeine, and salt can dry out your skin. Try low-caffeine tea instead of coffee, produce with high water content, minimal alcohol,
and be sure to rinse canned foods.

Conventional dairy products (milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt) contain hormones that may aggravate acne and inflammation. Instead, you can get vitamin D and calcium from broccoli, dark leafy greens, and sardines.

Fatty foods can throw off our balance of omega-3 and omega-6 (we get too much omega-6 from processed fats). Eat more omega-3-rich fish and eggs, walnuts,
flaxseed, and extra virgin olive oil.

For healthy, glowing skin, you can certainly use a moisturizing cream (http://www.korres.ca/products/category/moisturising), but healthy foods can help out, too! Increase your intake of vitamins E and C, antioxidants, and beta carotene.

Make your own skin treatments with honey and egg whites! And remember — if your whole body is healthy, your skin can be, too.

Today’s infographic submission comes to us from Center Parcs, a company that specializes in family holidays. The infographic uses the same colors as their website, so it’s clear that they are trying to stick to a brand palette for the design as opposed to placing a logo at the bottom of the infographic. The design itself seeks to identify 5 different types of dads and the things their kids can do for them on Father’s day without breaking the bank.

Ultimately, while this is a fun infographic concept, I am not sure it’s the best execution. The text is more of a focal point than the graphics, which begs the question: why not just write an article? Infographics serve many purposes, but one of those purposes is to do away with reading assignments and let the pictures tell the story. In a world where thousands of infographics are released daily, it’s important to focus on quality design for your infographic to get noticed, but I fear this will just hide in the crowd versus stand out.

Some suggestions for improvement:

Fully illustrate each type of dad versus using a silhouette. The lack of detail makes it hard to identify any humorous stereotypes about each dad and force the viewer to rely on the supporting text to find the humor in the piece. Since infographics are meant to save time for the viewer, forcing someone to read the text to fully understand the design goes against the point and hinders this design’s chances at success.

Expand the color palette to draw the eye in more. While I understand that the intentions of this design were to use the brand colors, this color palette is very flat and makes it so that there is not a visual hierarchy. This can be distracting for the viewer

Make the text smaller so that a viewer doesn’t feel overwhelmed. In general, an infographic with more than 200 words of text will get skipped over immediately, even ones with less than 200 words that have large text may be ignored, simply because the text size makes people feel like they are looking at an article instead of an infographic. Pairing down the text and making the font sizes smaller will help fix this problem.

Tobacco smoking is popular around the globe. How did it get started — and where is it now?

There are 1 billion cigarette smokers worldwide — every day, 80,000 – 100,000 more kids start smoking. Daily, 15 billion cigarettes are sold — 10 million every minute. With this high rate of sales, half of cigarette smokers will die from smoking-related illnesses, which killed 100 million people during the 20th century. This century, the estimate is 1 billion smoking-related deaths.

In 16,000 BCE, early humans first encountered tobacco plants. 11,000 years later, we began to cultivate them, and by 1 CE, they had spread across the Americas. As Mayans migrated, smoking moved with them. It took till 1531 CE for tobacco to be cultivated in Europe, but during the 16th century it was even used as currency. By the 17th century, it was taxed and imported to the UK – and it wasn’t until the end of the 18th century that health risks came to light.

Still, tobacco use flourished: cigarette factories opened, production increased, taxes increased. Consumption decreased after World War II, and shortly afterward smoking was linked to lung cancer.

By 1971, public smoking bans began to appear. At the turn of the century, the UK banned smoking ads, and now more states and countries are banning public smoking. Quit smoking products (http://www.nicorette.ca/) are now prevalent, too. What will happen next?

Do you know what’s really in your skin care products? Snail slime is used for skin healing, wrinkles, scars, acne, pigmentation problems and rough skin. Known as “KNU,” one skin product contains about 70% snail slime! The effects were noticed in Chile, Korea, and Africa, and this ingredient is now available in US skin care (http://www.aveeno.ca/) treatments.

Placenta (human and animal!) treats dry/damaged/aging skin and damaged hair. For those who can’t handle that, phyto placenta is made of plant placenta. But don’t judge — in one Nanjing, China hospital, 1 in 10 new parents takes their placenta home.

Human breast milk can aid dry/aging skin and acne — on both mom and baby! You can find this ingredient in lotions, creams, and soaps. About 20% of babies get baby acne (also known as cephalic pustulosis), and topical application of breast milk can help soothe the problem!

Nightingale droppings smooth rough/discolored/damaged skin. This ingredient was originally used to get stains out of silk fabric; geishas also used it as a skin whitener and smoothing agent. It may be the high concentration of urea in bird droppings that does the trick. Other fun names for this treatment are Bird Poop Facial, Geisha Facial, and Uguisu no fun (the Japanese name).

The products we buy for our skin may actually be damaging. Check out these myths!

Myth: Vigorously scrubbing skin with soap will cure acne.

It can make acne worse. Wash your face 1-2 times daily with warm water and gentle cleansers (http://www.neutrogena.ca/cleansers). Pat with a fresh towel.

Myth: Higher SPF = better protection.

Regardless of SPF, most sunscreens only protect from UVB rays — not harmful UVAs. Choose a broad spectrum SPF 15-30.

Myth: Junk food causes acne.

Greasy residue from junk food can aggravate acne, but there’s no link from eating it.

Myth: Popping pimples is the fastest way to clear them.

You actually push more bacteria and oil in — and it can scar.

Myth: Steam opens pores.

Pores don’t open or close… but steam helps cleanse and moisturize.

Myth: Shaving makes new hair thicker/darker.

The blade creates a blunt edge, making hair feel thicker.

Myth: Tanning cures acne.

While it might zap some pimples, UV rays stimulate oil production!

Myth: Tanning booths are safer than the sun.

You get 12x more UVA exposure, and your risk for cancer skyrockets.

Myth: Natural products are better.

Ideal products blend natural and synthetic ingredients.

Myth: Drinking lots of water will moisturize skin.

No link here — dehydration doesn’t dry your skin.

Go spread the word on these skin myths!

In the ancient days of Babylonians and Egyptians (3500 B.C.), a chewing stick sufficed: chewing on one end of the stick would split it into a brush-like texture.

In China (1600 B.C.), aromatic tree twigs freshened breath. Later, the first hard-bristled toothbrush was invented there.

In 1690, the word “toothbrush” was written into an autobiography — the word’s first known use. French dentists were the first to promote toothbrush use.

By 1780, William Addis created the first modern toothbrush… while in prison in England! It was made of cattle bone and swine bristles.

In 1857, H.N. Wadsworth was first to patent the toothbrush. Less than 30 years later, mass production of toothbrushes began in America.

In 1938, DuPont changed the way we brush with nylon synthetic bristles: softer and more hygienic than the hard hair bristles used at the time.

Following WWII, U.S. Army soldiers brought the toothbrushing habit home with them. Just a short time later, in 1954 Switzerland, the first electric toothbrush was produced.

It took just 7 more years to produce a rechargeable/cordless electric toothbrush, then a rotary. By 2003, the toothbrush was deemed the #1 invention people can’t live without.

Now, toothbrushes vary by head shape, bristle hardness, and handle curve. Specialty toothbrushes like chewable plastic, end-tufted (for gums) and interdental (for braces) are also prominent, along with mouthwash products (http://www.listerine.ca/), floss, and other dental hygiene implements.

What’s your favorite type of toothbrush?

A visually striking header, a red-and-black color scheme, and hard-hitting fonts masterfully communicate the sense of urgency associated with Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping in this infographic. The numbers are as well-visualized as the high-stress shopping environment is. We might have liked to see more data viz on the Google stats, or perhaps a scale or chart illustrating the interconnectedness of the numbers in the section, “How much people are planning to spend on Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping.”

The stats under “Predicted Shopping Trends” aren’t exactly clear — will 5% fewer people be shopping on Black Friday this year? Or 5% of all people? The latter seems unlikely because of the stat that follows. But we’re still not entirely sure.

All in all, we love the visual impact of this infographic. It’s sure to draw readers in and keep them reading through to the end — which is exactly what an infographic is supposed to accomplish!

Hiscox business insurance put together this infographic based on a study of small to medium enterprises. We love the dynamic silhouettes, which make us excited to follow the information through to the end, almost as if we were reading a story! In fact, we would love to see these characters carry us through the whole story, with country profiles that employ bigger text and are a little less dense, to fit with the feel of the first half of the infographic. However, it’s important that parallel data from the same countries is contrasted in some way, which is something the graphic already accomplishes.

Also, maybe it’s us, but we’re a bit confused about this stat: “75% hope to avoid redundancies or even to recruit.” Doesn’t avoiding redundancies sometimes involve letting workers go?

The style of the coins seems out of place among the otherwise clean lines of this piece. Also, the font could be a bit more imaginative — particularly in the headline.

This infographic is quite visually engaging and with a few tweaks, could make for stellar proof that infographics can present information in a way no other medium can!

If you’re not sure if prepaid cell phone plans are right for you, then this infographic will help you to decide. Learn the unbiased pros and cons of prepaid plans, and what personal phone needs you should consider before choosing between a contract or prepaid cellular plan. Prepaid isn’t for everyone, but the benefits of life without contracts is clear to most people. Before signing on a dotted line and committing yourself to two years without contract-parole, consider all of your options.

An attractive color scheme and instantly recognizable icons make weighing the pros and cons a piece of cake. A clean, spacious layout and brief snippets of text keep this infographic from being too text-heavy. But this infographics lacks one key element that can make any infographic shine: statistics and numbers. Infographics are ideal for using snazzily illustrated charts and graphs to get your point across. We’d like to know what percentage of people use prepaid phones, or how many switch over to prepaid once their contracts expire.
